(Home) Fuel. Leaks

I have a minor leak from my fuel pump.A diesel specialist informs me that this is quite common with Jap pumps and has quoted me £200 to repair it.As it might just be a seal worn I think £2oo is a bit much. Any advise? - (#30) gwyn wilde, 4 Mar 01

If it's from the top of the pump, it's the throttle shaft bush and seal, which might mean a new bush or some machine work as well as the seal. Likewise if it's the main shaft, it's a plain bearing, and this wears oval, especially if the timing belt has been overtightened. £200 isn't a bad price for a pump rebuild, and if your van has any performance or economy issues, it could be money well spent.

Yes, incredibly cheap. If they are going to do the full job!
Whilst trying to find a solution to my poor fuel economy last summer, I discussed with a Lucas agent about the fuel pump. They claim that to set it up correctly, it would need to be taken off and reset on special bench equipment. Not something that everyone has as it costs about £30k. Even the local Toyota dealer sends their stuff to them. The upshot was that the bill could be for 2 days minimum labour + parts +VAT. So by my reckoning, £200 isn't a bad price, provided the pump is set up properly afterwards.
