(Home) Noisy fan

I have a fan that is on permanently. It sits somewhere above the radiator (it being horizontal) and comes on even when I turn the ignition from cold and before the engine fires. Any idea what the fan is for, why it should be on all the time and how to correct it? I thought the viscous fan was the only fan supporting the cooling system.
Thanks

Ian, you have a 4x4 auto? there are two fans above the horizontal rad, and they are two speed. If you turn on the a/c, they will run slowly. There is a thermal switch in the coolant filler neck- if it makes (103c, I think) the fans come on at full speed. Check your aircon switch, the relays controlling the fans are behind the glovebox. Also check the wiring associated with the thermal sensor- a short to earth will run the fans.Contact me direct if you have any other queries.
