(Home) Front fog lights problem

I have a wonderful problem..........
I have a townie master surf.......G reg 2ltr diesel turbo.
When my headlights are on and I indicate right, my front fog lights will come on.
Anyone any idea how I can work this one out and fix it myself?
Since purchasing, I have had an immobiliser fitted, I assume that this hasn't caused the fault.
I have had a towbar and electrics fitted by a bunch of useless blind brainless cowboys.
I won't tell the full story, but I have just discovered that the electric socket they fitted is for auxilary use not towing use. Bloody good job it was too wet to go camping last year, or I would have had terrible problems.
Thinking that this was to blame, I have disconnected the socket until I purchase the correct one, but it hasn't cured it.
Any help please????????? - (#131) Steve lewis, 13 May 01

Do they come on bright or dimly? If dim, probably a bad earth. If bright, could it be anything to do with the cornering light setup? - (#133) David Miller, 13 May 01

They come on as normal, and don't flash with the indicators, they just stay on as long as the right indicator is flashing. - (#134) Steve Lewis, 13 May 01

Steve
I had a similar problem with mine when first got it. Side lights flashed with indicators, fog lamps came on with side lights etc. Ended up stripping the whole lot down and re-wired all the lights. Found that some clown had been messing about with the lighting circuits. Maybe as a result of having running lights on in Japan? Anyway they completely bodged it. You may have something similar. Once you work out how to get the front clusters off, its pretty straight forward with a strip of connector blocks, pliers and insulating tape. You don't need a wiring diagram, just work out what should be on from the sitches.

I think I will remove the front fog light bulbs and try to get it through the mot, then sort it out at my leisure.
I don't think that front fog lights are mandatory or am I wrong?
I also found out that the idiots that fitted my towbar and electrics, fitted an auxilary socket, not one suitable for my trailer.
The garage who supplied me has now gone out of business, so that's another thing that I have to sort out. - (#142) Steve Lewis, 15 May 01

bear in mind how the original set-up was in Japan.
the large side lights that wrap around the body (in-line with the headlamps) are wired to come on when the indicators come on -
i.e. when you use the left indicator the left side light illuminates (useful when it is dark to see the side of the road) - this only happens when the lights are on.
most dealers change this arrangement when imported so that these lights act as sidelights, in the mistaken belief that it will fail the mot.
as I bought mine directly from an importer I have kept the original set-up, as I already have small side lights in the bumper.
i guess a dealer has bodged the change in wiring - (#144) skippy, 16 May 01

With regards to the MOT depends on how picky they are.
If you have electrical parts fitted to a vehicle and they have switches and stuff to operate which are part of the vehicles make up then they need to work.
Friend of mine had his motorbike fail because he was missing a parking lamp on his front headlight unit as this was on the original spec for the bike. - (#152) Russ, 19 May 01
