(Home) Smoke

my 93 townie is puuting out black grey smoke on hill climbs ,starting off at lights eg and sometimes in hi speed. the engine has only done 50000 miles.could it be that it needs the injectors cleaning or just a full service? its fine starting up and leaving the house just every so often i get this smoke as ive said on hills particularly but desists after a couple of yards - (#139) Gwyn Wilde, 14 May 01

Could be injectors, but try fuel and air filters first, also consider having the injection timing checked

yeah - I get smoke too - and similar behaviour! I have just rebuilt after a head gask replacement engine mileage 100KKm.
How do I advance or retard the injector pump? - (#302) Mark Adams, 16 Jun 01

when standing idling get lots of whitish/blue smoke and plumes when i move off bclears when i am running,
also turbo light does not come on when i am stationary and rev the engine but comes on as normal about 1800 revs when im driving. recently had a new head fitted. any suggestions?

unfortunately, yes. Sounds like the seals are starting to go in the turbo...
Before panicing too much, just check that the crankcase breather hose isn't obstructed tho.

- (#8360) david miller, 8 May 03 15:22

where and how ?

- (#8361) ron coe, 8 May 03 15:34

short hose between cam cover and air inlet. Check for kinks or blockages.

if itis the turbo does anyone know where i can get a replacement , possibly a reconditioned unit?
rang a diesel specialist today he said it could possibly be retarded timing....

- (#8425) ron coe, 9 May 03 13:07

timing is unlikely if it comes and goes. What's the oil consumption like?

- (#8426) david miller, 9 May 03 14:27

oil consumption is ok dave, just top up as normal no visible increase

- (#8427) ron coe, 9 May 03 14:33

well unless you've put the timing belt on wrong or the pump's loose, the only reason for timing to shift would be a duff pump- expensive!
How many miles have you done like this? Enough to show excessive consumption?

Have you looked at the breather yet? A blocked breather pressurising the crankcase will force the turbo to leak (been there done that...) Make sure to run the engine with the breather hose off and/ or the filler cap off (watch for spray tho, put a cloth over the filler...) If it still does it, I'd go turbo before I'd go pump- especially if the turbo was out during the head job.

What miles on the turbo?

- (#8428) david miller, 10 May 03 1:41

checked pipes seemed ok no blocks no kinks, until i source a replacement or repair is it ok to keep using the van?
- (#8430) ron coe, 10 May 03 9:53

should be. If you want to delve a bit deeper, take the inlet pipe off the turbo and check for oil and excessive play. Although the smoke you're seeing I'll bet is from the exhaust side. You might want to try one of the de-gumming/ de-sludging oil treatments too- the seal is not unlike a piston ring, it's forced into a groove on the shaft by boost or exhaust pressure (depending on whether it's inlet or exhaust side), and a buildup of goop in the wrong place could stop the ring from moving as it's meant to as pressure builds against it.
That's why the breather is so critical on a turbo'd car- any crankcase pressure travels up the oil drain from the turbo and ends up opposing the pressure on the other side of the turbo's seals causing them to leak.

the green turbo light should kick in at just over 3000rpm when reving in neutral

hallo guys.its good to have a site for 2cturbo engines. I had a jeep powered by a toyota 2c turbo diesel engine and ive obeservd that dirty nozzle tips cause smoky engine. The nozzle tips should be cleaned or better still, replaced.gud day.

I've got a 2 liter turbo diesel- f reg, relatively low mileage, (71ooo Km = ca 45 K miles) and had a new exhaust system fitted last Friday by Pipecraft in Basildon who've done a good job, certainly much cheaper than Kwick Fit.
Perhaps it was naive to hope that the black smoke coming out of the exhaust when accelerating would stop once a new exhaust is fitted
it didn't.
And the car is extremely sluggish going uphills.

So I checked the airfilter :though it is dirty and could do with being replaced( does anyone have a ref number for it/ idea where to get it? I drove around without an airfilter and the sud coming out of exhaust was still the same.

a retired mechanic suggested it might be the injector. or failing that the fuel pump ( very expensive he said)
I live in South East Essex . Any helpor suggestion deeply appreciated.
kind regards
klaus

can anyone tell me where the fuse for the heater fan is located as my fan has stopped working. I've checked the fuses under the dash and they all seem ok. I'm a new townie owner and my wife and i are both delighted with the new baby and hope to have many years of happy motoring

It's a circuit breaker beside the fusebox. oval thingy with small hole in the top. press a pin through the hole to reset...

This should've been a new thread, BTW
