(Home) Radio wiring

Being a Townie owner of just one week I am finding this site very informative. My purchase is a 1991 super extra 2.0TD 4X4.
Q, I have read when browsing on one of the Townie sites the colour coding and description for wiring in a radio. But now I need it can I find it NO! Please point me in the right dirction very fustrated.
The dealer has had a go managing to blow the Tail light fuse and the Cig lighter fuse. - (#192) John Hardman, 24 May 01

I haven't seen a site with that info, but if the original connector is still on the loom, you just need to buy an Autoleads adaptor- it's the model for Toyota, VW Taro, and Daihatsu, I think. - (#196) david miller, 25 May 01

John
If the original connector is missing, I would be inclined to wire directly into the fusebox. It's almost directly below where the radio fits. Presumably you will need a continous live and a switched live. The radio should have its own fuse, located extreme bottom left of the fuse box (7.5A). If you need a continous live try DOME (7.5A).

Thank you Ian and David. I recollect clicking on “archives” on a problems page. But I will try and get the adaptor, only a couple of wires have been cut from the original - (#216) John Hardman, 26 May 01

Hi Folks,

I have just bought a Townace Super Extra 1992 model. I took the radio out as it was using Japanese frequencies and I have replace it with a Toyota Radio Cassette. It was very easy to change as the modular plugs on the back were exactly the same as on the old one. There are two plugs - I think that one contains the power requirements and the other connects to the speakers. Anyway, the problem is that when I turn on the vehicle lights the backlight on the radio display goes out - just when you need it the most! Does anyone know how I can cure this please. The radio model number is 58402.

Any info greatly appreciated. Thanks for reading.

Cheers Andrew.

Looks like the wiring doesn't quite match between the old and the new. Did you get a wiring diagram for the connectors with the new Toyota radio?

Some radios are made to work with an extra amp, means wiring differently. The second, smaller connector is for the rear speakers, IIRC. Just trace which wire goes live when you turn the lights on, and cut it...

Could I make a simple request please?

If you make a request on this board and anticipate receiving large data files such as pictures or scanned manual pages, could you please ensure your mail inbox has sufficient space to receive them.

Thanks
Ian

I've seen a number of threads about wiring radio's - everyone else has the proper Toyota connector blocks - I don't. the previous owner butchered it. My old radio didn't work and was never properly wired in anyway. I have a well documented new radio but cannot determine which wires to use out of the 12 or so that have all been neatly trimmed off behind where the old one was fitted - HELP PLEASE!!
p.s. the main power source appears dead also - anyone know what fuse controls it (there is no fusebox cover panel on my ace)

Dave,

There was a recent thread with nice hints in replacing toyota radio sets, or snaping in a harness adaptor or even taping into the wiring. Go to this link
http://www.installdr.com/QuickWiring.html and download the pdf for the toyota vehicles, it has all there's to know for a diy including matching toyota wires with new aftermarket models.

Thanks,
Manecas
