Seems like the problem that Steve and I had is fairly common place. Probably do need side lights for MOT. I stripped my whole light clusters out and rewired the lot. Now I have the side indicator and amber strips flash when they are meant to, and side lights only come on when I turn them on (they used to flash with the indicator). Front fogs now work also. It should be an easy matter of deduction as to what wires go where when you start switching things on. You'll need some decent wire, connector blocks, pliers, insulating tape, a couple of hours and plenty of patience.
