(Home) Towbar, which type fits? (Sp+)

My Townace looks just like a Spacecruiser (uk) the only differance is 4x4, high roof,2Ltr TD,air con....
Will the tow-bar off the spacecruiser fit my Townace
( it's a 1987/8 E reg model ) - (#249) Paul Morgan, 1 Jun 01

Probably not... Jap models apparently don't have mounting points, and the CR30 (4x4) has a different underside anyway. - (#252) david miller, 2 Jun 01

I am wanting to fit a tow bar to my J reg Townie.
I do not want to £185 for the specific one I've seen advertised.
Is there one available at a more reasonable price. Alternatively will the Hi-Ace tow bar fit or be made to fit.
That costs only £62 which seems more sensible
Thanks - (#1977) Trevor Wright, 28 Jan 02

It's a townie bar for a townie, unfortunately, even a model F bar won't fit. £180 sounds a wee bit high though, I thought Watling did one for about £140 - (#1980) david miller, 29 Jan 02

I fitted a Watling on my Liteace within 2 weeks of buying and it cost me £130.00 and I had to fit it myself. These are the only ones that fit correctly. - (#1994) Eagleneil, 29 Jan 02

Eagleneil,
I'm looking to do the same to my '92 Liteace, was the fitting a dificult job? what year is your Liteace?
cheers

Has anyone had a towbar from watling or simalar with a pattern diagram of mounting points etc so that i can manufacture one myself.
Any info at all may help as the price list i have is £149.50 plus vat and delivery and I find that is expensive. My local towbar dealer gave me some info that they get a towbar for a spacecruiser and cut and weld it and it fits would this be right.
Any help please Phil Cook - (#2077) Phil Cook, 3 Feb 02

I paid 135 to have one fitted with single electrics. It's a Witter. - (#2078) Maria, 4 Feb 02

The answer to your question is No I haven't, but I paid a bit more for mine from a local towbar specialist, and they seemed to think they had to get a special from Holland??
Sounds like Maria got lucky finding a Witter for that price. Do you really want a cut up and re-welded bar? I'd have to trust the guy with torch a lot before I went for that. - (#2085) SteveFE, 4 Feb 02

The bloke who fitted it bought it from a supplier in Leicester.

Thanks Steve and Marie.
Makes sense not to cut and reweld a new one.
I did make one a few years ago for my transit mini bus incorporating the step and pull a ton & a half. Good thick angle iron. It was still ok after 3 years use then i sold it.
I forgot to say its for a townace cr-21 1990.
Marie was yours for townace and if it was and i could find a witter dealer local in somerset i will try the same.
Thanks for the help

Mine was for a Space Cruiser Model F...sorry. - (#2109) Maria, 5 Feb 02

phil ive heared all sorts of rubbish about this game.i have a f reg masterace surf the cheapest ive come across was from watling engineers total price inc ball +cover, electrics, vat was £183.83 it may be cheaper for your model.but you will still have to pay someone to fit it or do it yourself(not a pleasant job).i havent bought it yet i'm still looking around, but i'll try to keep you posted. - (#2229) ant, 15 Feb 02

Has anyone got a towbar they don't use for sale to fit my townace 1990 2.0lt td 2wd.
New price is about £190.00.
You can email if you want.
Thanks Phil Cook - (#2521) Phil Cook, 12 Mar 02

I went to a local towbar supplier who quoted £165 for a custom made bar including fitting. still not cheap but I'm going to get them to do the job. - (#2574) Rob Storer, 28 Mar 02

Thanks Rob
I may try that if this fails.
I had a email from Jonh Heaps through this site telling me that a space cruiser should fit.
Here is his info it may help anyone wanting to fit a towbar.
I will keep the bok informed.
Phil
I have got a 1989 townace super extra 2wd it has the same body as the space cruser except for the front end bonnet lights ect
I got my tow bar from a scrap yard off a space cruser it cost me £15.
You have to remove the rear bumper from the chassis it is held in with 4 bolts and spire screws. I had to cut the bumper brackets removing the tail ends that go down the chassis legs drill and bolt the tow bar to the bumper with what's left of the brackets. And then cut a semi circle in the bottom centre of the bumper for the towing ball to protrude through. The tow bar fits into the original bumper position. using the bolts that you have removed. - (#2575) Phil Cook, 28 Mar 02

If it only attaches to the bumper mounts, I wouldn't tow anything too heavy... - (#2616) david miller, 1 Apr 02
