(Home) Turbo lights

By the rev' counter on each side of the wording
"TURBO" there is a green light which shows the turbo is in use,
What is the orange light on the other side for?? - (#250) Paul Morgan, 1 Jun 01

The amber light tells you that the turbo is creating too much pressure (above 10psi), indicating a wastegate failure. - (#253) david miller, 2 Jun 01

The green light is turbo on. The orange light is pressure warning. What is it when neither light comes on. I can see the lights when i put the key in to start and they go out and that's it. Is the turbo working, what is the connection to the green light from the turbo?
Many Thanx Bill - (#465) Bill, 6 Jul 01

two pressure switches, one 1.5psi, the other 10psi. Both lights come on as a self-test, green means turbo is creating boost. At low loads or revs, the turbo will not create boost.

my green turbo light does not come on, even when i rev to 4000rpm. Do i need to worry or is there a quick test i can do to find the problem?

Does the car still run OK? if the turbo isn't working, you WILL notice a loss of power. Do both lights come on at switchon?
According to the Toyota fault diagnosis section, if both lights come on, then go out, and don't light when under boost, check the pressure switches!! (they are mounted on the front of the air filter.

Hi i'm new to townace's and have now found out due to theis great web site that the two lights on the speedo
ie green and orange are for the turbo green working orange over boosting which i gather is bad... my problem is
these lights come on at start up and stay on all the time
does this mean there is a problem with the turbo or a fault with the switches it atarts ok but i think its under powerd for a 2Lt but not sure as this is my first
townie and my first diesel
thanks in anticipation of your replies

Probably a blown fuse. Is the no charge warning light going out? Check the gauge and charge fuses.

- (#6580) david miller, 21 Dec 02

thanks for you replie no the charge light is on all the time as well also an orange light next to the charge light looks like a T joint with a drip falling down dont know what it is.... checked all the fuse's under the dash all ok so unless this fuse lives somewear else it's not that

- (#6581) edward james needham, 21 Dec 02

Well, it sounds like your alternator is duff then. Probably brushes, but maybe regulator. The turbo lights will respond correctly when the alternator is fixed.

Thanks for your help Dave i will let you know how i get on

- (#6583) edward james needham, 22 Dec 02

hi hope you can help me out again the alternator is ok the regulator as been changed still no lights.in tha manual for the engine it say's there is a charge light relay and everything points to this beening at fault but can i find i could find a needle in an haystack easyer hope someone know's where it's located

help

not all models have the relay- the manual is referring to the Camry, and other internally regulated alternators IIRC. None of my diagrams show the relay in spacecruisers or townies.
You are sure the alt. is OK? has it been thoroughly tested? brushes replaced, diode pack checked?
What is happening to the warning light connection on the alt. when you start the engine? Should be going above 12v.

- (#6663) david miller, 6 Jan 03

Hi david well the alt as had new brushes and the com cleaned the regulator is brand spanking new strieght from toyota. Not checked the voltage from it but would have thought that to be ok it being brand new. The thing is everything is working ok battery is fully charged just all the warning lights ign turbo exsapntion tank water in fuel light all on all the time
thats why i thought if there was a relay it might explain it all. I will have to try and follow the white wire through the wiring loom its a bit baffling because it's white from the reg and its black with a brown dot from the warning light well back to the maze lol thanks for your valuable help so far

Jason, have a look at all the little capilliary pipes from the turbo to the egr valve area and near the air filter, there are quite a few joints there - one lost connection and you will have lost your pressure to the gauge - i recall disturbing one near the air filter while changing it once, and having the same prob as you

hi i just bought a 89 dt and was wondering why my green light never comes on is this a problem and is it just a case of adjusting the turbo boost

- (#11691) john, 11 Nov 03 2:46

Couldn't the problem just be a blown bulb? Until I checked the bulbs in the binnacle on my '92 Liteace, I didn't even know the turbo light existed!

- (#11692) Al Bickley, 11 Nov 03 3:36

There are LED's aren't they. Won't have blown unless massive voltage applied to them. Unless yours are different of course.

Regards Rob.

- (#11693) Rob Drinkwater, 11 Nov 03 15:47

Hmm, no, they were definately conventional panel bulbs. I knew that my Litie was a bit different, but I didn't think it was THAT different!

- (#11694) Al Bickley, 12 Nov 03 4:06

On the post 92 models, there's just one light, a fault indicator which is a bulb. Earlier ones have two LEDs. Everything else on the dash is ordinary bulbs tho...
