(Home) Fast idle, engine cover stay

i have a townace super extra 1989 turbo diesel auto . anyone know what the tracking should be its wearing the front right hand tyre inner , also the fast idle button has no effect . does it control a relay somewhere ..lastly ..does the engine cover have a stay somewhere ?.. kind regards jim - (#254) j adgo, 2 Jun 01

When you say "does the engine cover have a stay", I assume you mean is there anything there to hold up the engine cover?
If so, the answer is yes! a plastic strip by the seatbelt, it clips onto the cover to hold it in place.
If you find it, it will be obvious how it works.
I think there is a refernce to the tracking further down in this forum.
As for the fast idle, I have the same problem.
Mine has no effect whatsoever.
I am sure that when I first had the car, it did work when it felt like it, but now it never does.
I am sure that there is a refernece to this question further down in this forum, and I recall something about it only operating when the air conditioning is running, it does not in my case!!
If anyone knows which relay is for the fast idle, I would be grateful to know!
the fuse is ok.

the fast idle (idle-up) is controlled by two vacuum valves. One lifts the idle when the aircon is turned on, the other when the idle up switck is depressed. However the idle up switch gets it's supply from the heater fan switch, so the fan has to be on for the idle-up to work. No relays in the circuit, if it doesn't work, check the valves, they're between the airfilter and engine, roughly.
Tracking is different for 2x4 and 4x4,BTW

thankyou dave and steve , ive now found the bonnet stay .. as mine is a 2x4 , if anyone knows the tracking figures i would be grateful , re the idle prob .. looks like the valves are to blame .. i might try and see if i free them off ,,regards jim

Where exactly are the valves? did you find them?
I have not yet looked for them.

to steve
the valves are on the top left hand side of the engine close to the air filter and the rocker box ..they are black and have a multipin connector for the wires ..i unplugged mine and plugged them back in ,,the result was a fast idle switch which worked ..im not sure if it was a bad connection or the mere fact that they had been disturbed which may have freed them off - (#288) J ADGO, 9 Jun 01

Have now sorted out the fast idle.......
The rubber air pipe had come away when I changed the air filter (I guess).
Put it back in place, tested it, and it worked fine.
I would be tempted to remove the rocker cover and have a look if I knew what to look for. My engine is very noisy for a few minutes on start up, (rattling) dies down somewhat, but is always there in the background and especially after periods of high speed. Despite this the car runs very well and is very reliable.
