(Home) Insurance (03/7) -

Ive just reinsured my townace with Hastings
3 points claim for theft from van last year
Cost including legal cover £344.00.
If I reccomend anyone I can receive £50 for every one who takes out a policy!!!
How about getting cheap insurance and me some cash!!! - (#269) carol dryden, 5 Jun 01

I got insurance with N.I.G. through the motor caravan agency for only £281 fully comp with protected no claims.
I get nothing for referring.
Steve.. - (#270) Steve Lewis, 5 Jun 01

Hastings who? Have you got a URL or phone no? - (#276) Steve FE, 5 Jun 01

The motor caravan agency would not cover me they claimed it is to difficult to give cover! I have had fun too finding Insurance, Tesco came out best quoting £472.50. But on receiving the policy the £100 excess had jumped to £350 and they had neglected to tell me that unless an approved immobiliser is fitted nothing is covered for theft. The cost had also gone up by another sixteen pounds, be very careful when getting a quote from them. Promptly cancelling this policy, I moved to Footman James (Tel 0121 561 6250 or web www.footmanjames.co.uk) cost £474.60 excess £100 no alarm required + breakdown cover.
This covers me and my wife in the Manchester area M24, fully comprehensive both aged just under forty with full no claims, protected NCB and legal Protection + for use in connection with work by my wife. This does not seem to bad against the highest quote of £895.00
I also get nothing for referring.
John H - (#283) John Hardman, 7 Jun 01

This does not seem to bad against the highest quote of £895.00
Hehe, my highest was £1300!
I stayed with Tesco, have to check your info about them...
Holger - (#333) Holger Laux, 21 Jun 01

Adrian Flux Import "specialist policies for imported vehicles" 08700 777888 didn't hesitate to give me an instant quote. I haven't seen them mentioned here, or on the Insurance thread last November.
For me the premium was about the same as continuing with my present insurer (NIG who, like several other insurers, seem to do it as a concession to existing policyholders). Flux were insisting on a Thatcham immobiliser (for which I got one quote elsewhere of £150 total) - whether that's a big downside over the period of your insurance will depend on your own level of risk/premium. - (#338) Dave Mason, 22 Jun 01

new to this board but after reading about insurance which seems to be a bug bear try elephant.co.uk only cost me £328 fully comp protected no claims age 36 self and spouse sdp no security device needed no need to be garaged. good hunting all - (#297) RICHAD, 15 Jun 01

I realise that this site is mainly to do with matters mechanical, but can I ask who people are insured with? My insurance is due and I have tried different sites, but the majority don't insure Japanese imports, presently I'm with Direct Line but would be interested who else offers cover.
Thanks. - (#1233) Eagleneil, 13 Oct 01

I had this trouble when I purchased my imported Masterace but, there are various Companies who are now keen to quote. I got a good deal from Swintons who got me cover from Norwich Union at a reasonable price. You could try Norwich Union direct or go through a broker such as Swintons. - (#1234) John Davis, 13 Oct 01

You could try Tesco Insurance - I insured my 1990 2.0TD Super Extra fully comprehensive in August for £289.00 after having other quotes up to £600.00+ and I also got a really excellent deal on 2nd car insurance for my wife!! Well worth a try!! - (#1237) Frank Newall, 14 Oct 01

Insurance is a subject that has cropped up many times in the past on this board and threads should be recorded on Dave Mason's site. Like you I am insured with Direct Line having switched to them early this year. They were considerably cheaper than Norwich my previous insurer. We paid £273 as opposed to £440 the pevious year. There are others as suggested by other contributers but none could beat Direct Line at the time.
Ian - (#1239) Ian Dunse, 15 Oct 01

Direct Line quoted me £263.00 fully Comp, Cheaper because my wife was a named driver, if I took her off, it rose to £273.00! Third party, fire & theft was £207.00, can anyone beat that?
Eagleneil - (#1240) Eagleneil, 15 Oct 01

Strange about Direct Line - I tried them before trying Tesco and was told that they did not insure Japanese imports!! - (#1241) Frank Newall, 15 Oct 01

Frank
I'm sure most of us can tell a story about insurance companies. I have also been denied insurance from companies recommended by contributers to this site. I think they change the rule on whether they insure imports or not on a regular basis such that the person on the end of the phone arranging the policy may be unwittingly giving bum information.
Ian - (#1244) Ian Dunse, 16 Oct 01

And now pain ...
Me plus missus. Early 30s. No accidents. North East London. Three years off the road since we were last insured but had about 7 years no claims before that. Townace SE TD 2.0, H Reg.
One company would honour the no claims - Norwich union. We took it to get back in the loop.
The Cost? £1,270 (UKP).
I hope I can do it cheaper next year!
==== JIM - (#1248) Jim Reynolds, 16 Oct 01

I got the insurance for my 1994 Royal Lounge through Tesco's Insurance. I found a few other companys who did import insurance (Direct Line etc) but only Tesco and Direct Line would accept that mt Townie had a 2.2 Turbo Diesel engine, all the others said it had to be a 2.0 for the year! - (#1277) Dave Freer, 22 Oct 01

Just insured through Footman James
(1990 2.0 townie super extra 4x4 value £3,995)
quoted £278 myself+spouse age 40's full ncb
includes breakdown cover and only £100 excess
all the others wanted £250 excess (tesco,Direct Line etc) needless to say snatched it with both hands! cheers Paul T
Footman James, Cradley heath 0121 561 4196 - (#1301) paul thomas, 27 Oct 01

I've got mine through Frizzells, also perhaps known as Liverpool Victoria, £ 260 odd, myself, wife named drivers. also Barclaycard are currently running quite a good deal too. - (#1318) David Lawrence, 30 Oct 01

Just got my Insurance through Liverpool Victoria-Otherwise known as Frizzells. 1994 Townace Royal Lounge 2.2 TD kept on the road £342 fully comp. This policy only has a £100 excess for both accidental damage and fire & theft, and they do not require an immobiliser or alarm fitted. - (#1984) Dave Freer, 29 Jan 02

hi dave I also got my Insurance through Liverpool Victoria but it cost me a lot more
it was £433 for 2.ltd 1990 4x4 .
they did not ask me to fit any thing at .
what get to me is we are paying over the top for the cover I know that to have a mini bus insured it would cost about the same but we have less seat in the toyota why they ask for so much ??
next time I am going to look for a chep one any one have got a better insurance co let me know thank you all - (#2015) bigmoe, 30 Jan 02

I did have my insurance through Tesco's but they charged £362, instead of Liverpool Victoria £342, plus Tesco's and most other places required an excess of £350 compared to £100 with L.V.....I think the reason we pay extra is because Insurance co's know that the cost of body panels etc is going to be higher, than for a Transit mini bus etc, also probably harder to get..... - (#2019) Dave Freer, 31 Jan 02

Absolutely right, we get a rough deal out of the insurance companies as well as the garages. Unfortunately they not only know that panels are expensive for Townies, but also one of the first things that gets it in a front ender is the air con condensor, which normally means other air con parts need replacing as well. Another problem the insurance companies face is the fact that many get stolen & are never recovered due to the fact they end up in their component parts & sold as second hand spares. My wife & I are insured with Tesco, I am 32, she is 34, full no claims, fully comp, glass covered, protected no claims, £250 excess, must have CAT2 immobilser or they won't cover theft. cost us £464, plus we get extra 10% off as she works for Tesco. I think that wasn't too bad considering we are both quite young, cover is excellent & the first quote we got was from our previous insurer (Norwich Union) which was £1351. But then I suppose we also have to remember that the Townie doesn't exactly have Ferrari performance either. Regards Rob. - (#2028) Rob Drinkwater, 31 Jan 02

I have a 2.0 turbo diesel townace F reg I am 34 my girlfriend is 29 and we pay £324.00 with £100.00 excess fully comp. This is with a company called Perimeter Insurance agencies. If any one wants the full address or phone number let me know. The only thing they insisted on was a Cat 2 immobiliser, but as the townie already had one fitted this wasn't a problem. BTW when I phoned round for quotes they ranged from--sorry we don't cover those vehicles to the £2000.00 down to the £324.00 (guess which one I chose!)
Steve - (#2031) Steve Taylor, 31 Jan 02

Hi, I paid 159.60 fully comp + 31,50 No claim protection + legal protection total =207.90 With Privilege Insurance
0845 246 8555. They gave me the best quote of all, worth a try if you are looking for insurance. You need to pay by credit card over the phone. I declined the brake down cover of around 100, this quote was full no claims, wind shield deductible of 50, 10,000 miles annual. Kept in garage and an immobiliser thou that is not required. 150 excess.
Harry - (#2033) Harry Chrisna, 31 Jan 02

I've got insurance through Direct Line, £264.00 fully comp, £250 excess for myself, 38, and the wife, also 38, with approx mileage of 8000 per year. This is for a 91 Liteace 2.0 TD 4x4 auto. - (#2034) Eagleneil, 31 Jan 02

Funny, I'm with privilege too. They asked me for a Thatcham immobiliser, and when I told them to stick it, they said, that's OK, we'll just delete theft cover. Strangely, they are Underritten by Direct Line, who DON'T cover N. Ireland (according to their nice ad. on CH4) - (#2044) david miller, 1 Feb 02

Yeah I got a similar deal with Direct Line, slightly more for 12k miles a year and a whopping £30 on top to cover my wife's recent 3 points speeding offence. She didn't get it in the Townace though, impressive if she had though eh?
Ian - (#2045) Ian Dunse, 1 Feb 02

David
The motor trade has to stand out as the worst in terms of standardisation for goods, services and prices (although IT may be a close second). I've found it difficult to reproduce quotes and even the will to cover, from many insurance companies, following declarations on this site. Then you have the issue of costs for spares which can vary even from the same supplier. A racket? You bet it is.
Ian - (#2046) Ian Dunse, 1 Feb 02

I phoned loads of Brokers/Agents/Companies May of last year when I got my 92 Liteace. Many would'nt insure in NI. Best I got was £550 through Endsleigh/Service Policies at Lloyds that was with full no claims, £250 excess and I'm 43 (sush!). Heck I think its time to start phoning around again ! - (#2062) stephenjudge, 1 Feb 02

I work around Sheffield and I know some of the hills around there, so you could speed down them, provided that they haven't stuck concrete bollards half way down the street as they seem to enjoy doing! - (#2063) Eagleneil, 1 Feb 02

My current policy is with Axa direct for the BMW so I rang them at the start of the week, and they dont cover imports. So policy cancelled, as the Townie is due this week. As most people raved about Frizzel I rang them next. £273 quid fully comp including SDP and Business, Windscreen etc, not bad. Most of the other companies afterward were Laughable, 515 or demanding an imbolizer is fitted. So I will be using Frizzels

NUKe

- (#5701) NUKe, 1 Oct 02

Hi Do you have a contact number for Frizzle insurance as i cant find them on the net or in the big yellow book. Thanks John

- (#5760) john, 9 Oct 02

Just had my renewal notice for my townie 2.o TD . For myself (35) and my partner (29) fully comp only £206.00 .
- (#5762) Steve Taylor, 9 Oct 02

Thanks for that this company sounds as if they do a good deal instead of making up a figure.

- (#5808) john, 10 Oct 02

Can anyone help with cheap insurance at the moment I am with Footman James and my quote for this my second year is £460. I have full no claims but this was the best i found.

- (#7485) shirley riley, 28 Feb 03

Liverpool Victoria (part of Frizzell). Me and spouse both over 40, full NCB, protected NCB - £209. Further discount for CSMA membership - £180.70.

Beat that!

- (#7486) Ian Dunse, 28 Feb 03

RAC insurance direct over the net, £175 fully comp with protected bonus, this is for a 2ltr petrol spacecruiser

- (#7487) graham, 28 Feb 03

Shirley, you probably have the disadvantage of youth (but I'd swap any day). As an "oldie", I insure with Norwich Union, through the brokers, Swintons. I have full NCB and the premium, for Wife and Self is about £320. However, in view of Ian's posting, I will shop around and start with a call to Liverpool Victoria.

- (#7488) John Davis, 28 Feb 03

okay i am intrigued, the best quote i have had is £280 tpf&t, age 45 (although obviously i look much younger!!), through one of the insurance companies in the ace answers link (their name escapes me) i have hundreds of years no claims and a squeaky clean licence.

what is going on?? are the cheaper quotes for uk spec cars as insurance companies claim they are often charged higher repair costs for import vehicles with variant (japanese) parts. consequently they charge higher premiums..........??

- (#7489) George, 28 Feb 03

tesco was the best for my and my wife £400 ish 36 and 31 full no claims
hth ian

- (#7490) ian, 28 Feb 03

I pay around 218 with full no claims, However do not forget that other things can change your premiums including your post code our freinds from over the Water in NI will certainly testfy to the rip off they have to suffer.

NUKe

- (#7491) NUKe, 28 Feb 03

Hi All, I am at present with Tesco, although the premium is reasonable the excess is EXCESSIVE. Out of curiosity I've tried others afterwards,I eventually got a much more favourable quote, much less excess etc; from Quoteline Direct on Tel :- 0870 444 2515.Or try www.quotelinedirect.co.uk
They even offer up to 60% NCD if you've been driving a company vehicle, and sometimes even on more than one of your cars. A discount for non smokers, their list of lifestyle discounts is quite lengthy. They are part of the Wilsons Insurance Group, and I think worth a
try. Wyn

- (#7492) Wyn Hamer, 28 Feb 03

Hey!!
You don't know how lucky you have it.
Full no claims insured and spouce over 40, fully comp £850, 92 Liteace TD.
Insurance in Northern Ireland is unreal and were not the worse for joyriding and accidents, in the UK, as may be thought.
Most of the mainland insurers won't cover here!!

- (#7493) stephen judge, 28 Feb 03

Mine is £212 with CIS (Cooperative Insurance) with 65% no claims and protected, but sole driver. Can pay quarterly and the agent comes to the house to collect.

- (#7494) Jo, 28 Feb 03

As Ian, Frizzells plus CSMA discount = £190 full comp, me spouse and one other named driver, and living in UKs worst car crime area! However I did not get a discount for the CAT1 I have fitted, nor did they ask for one to be installed.

- (#7495) Clive, 1 Mar 03

What is CSMA ?

- (#7496) farook, 3 Mar 03

CSMA = Civil Service Motoring Association, £17.00 a year for all sorts of discounts. See web site
http://www.csma.uk.com/ to see if you can obtain membership.
- (#7497) Clive, 3 Mar 03

How times change? A couple of years ago, there was the expected "sniff" when I mentioned, to most insurance Companies, that I ran an imported vehicle so, I have stuck with a high priced insurer who originally implied that I was lucky to get my funny vehicle insured at all. Even Liverpool Victoria would not help me then, though I have the perfect credentials for an insurance quote ie, grey hair, no convictions, max no claims etc etc. Thanks Ian for you posting. Contacting Liverpool Victoria again, I have now saved myself around £150 on my insurance renewal.

- (#7498) John Davis, 3 Mar 03

Yes John

completely different experience now than 3 years ago when I had to go with Norwich for £440, £300 xs and no NCB protection and providing I paid yet another £100 for an immobiliser.

Following previous advice from this site I checked with L&V this year and was gobsmacked at the quote. £100 xs and not interested in immobiliser. If only it were the same story over the Irish sea, then we may not have lost one of our "oldest" friends.

- (#7499) Ian Dunse, 3 Mar 03

Is there anyone living in the wigan area who has found cheap insurance for the 1993 k-reg toyota townace it's engine size is 1998. Thank you to all the advice already given but the best quote frizzel1s could give was 295.81 for an excess of £300 for paul and £350 for me. or £306.41 with excesses of £200 and £250. I have 7yrs protected no claims. Anyone any more advice always welcome.

- (#7500) shirley riley, 3 Mar 03

hi
thanks for all your e-mails but i've gone back to footmanjames as they now said they would fully comp. for £406.00 including break down cover after a mile away from home or add another £34 if i want home start. only £100 excess but l.v. was £306 but excess of £300 and no breakdown. dicect line 01215616208 please mention me broker ref risa02pc01/100

- (#7604) shirley, 10 Mar 03

Just as an additional note. If any of you work for Tesco's, you get an extra 10% off your insurance if you give them your clubcard number as you do with your shopping. Ours was £430ish but had all the trimmings including windscreen cover and breakdown but they insisted on a cat 1 system or they wouldn't cover theft so that set me back another £300 but worth it I suppose if only for the additional peice of mind.

- (#7754) Dave B, 18 Mar 03

regarding front lamps, when i purchased my townace the white lamps which were originaly used in japan as corner lamps when the indicaters are in use were connectde to side lamps. this meant that i was using 35w side lamps with a large drain on the battery. the cure is to replace the bulbs with 5w as used here and use the displaced bulbs in the front fog lamps as a white bulb gives more light.

- (#7755) JOHN PARKER, 20 Mar 03

Our Liteace is insured with Direct Line who when we purchased it was the only company who would touch us. We are both late thirties, full NCD me as main driver and my husband as second named driver. Norwich Union told us they wouldn't insure imports. I pay £40 per month fully comp with full recovery, legal package etc. At least is goes down every year, we originally paid nearly £50 per month, but the excess is high.

- (#7803) Jan Pannell, 20 Mar 03

Thank you for recommending Liverpool Victoria (Frizzell). I have just saved a small fortune from changing over from Tescos. Thank you also to the people who run and contribute to this web site.

- (#7839) ray eaton, 25 Mar 03

Hi all, don't think anyone has mentioned (only skim read posts)a company called Groupama. Insured me & the missus for £250 F.C. with low excess. age 33 & 30 full NCB '90 2.0TD masterace, much better than quote from Liverpool Victoria that I had. Anyone interested e-mail me & I'll send number or put on site if prefered.
Regards, Tony.

- (#7840) Tony Lloyd-Jones, 25 Mar 03

Hi one and all
i rang Liv&Vic insurance and they couldnt offer me any insurance as it was not a 2TDi ?? what on earth do they mean. The lady said they have no listing for a TD.
I tried to explain that i did not think there was a 2TDi townace but she was not interested. They did give me a quote last year for the same townace but she still said NO! am i missing something.
Iv already had a reasonable quote for £246 f/c with protection and only £150 excess. Still ringing around though.
Any way kids are of school so going away for a few days.
my best wishes to you all ,,,, how are you david in N.I
javed

- (#8694) javed, 23 May 03 16:51

just to follow up ,,,,, Turned out the quote i was giving was wrong ,, silly lady at the call center had my date of birth down as 1952 when it should have been 1962, so best they could do was £450 yuk.
rang around all day Friday and Sat.am and resolved my self to remaining with my present broker re. £375.
Any way i was reading one of Dave Masons postings today were he gave a different number for L&V (0870 2422405) so i cheekly decieded to ring again and GUESS what !!!!
polite chap answered the phone asked a coulple of questions and said, as a matter of fact """well sir "" is it a R/Lounge ,Master or super extra ( which is what i have )and hey presto,, bleeding hell fire,, with CSMA , £282.10 F/C with protection and was'nt concerned about immobilisor ,,, WELL what do you make of that,, needless to say i stopped ringing around and excepted the quote,,, saved my self exactly £100
I am know convinced of how much a hit and miss this game is and how from one call advisor to another,, how wrong they can be. The first advisor point blank refused ,, and the second advisor brought the details up within a second.. or was it some thing to do with the telephone number. sorry i the excitment i forgot to give them your refence no ill ring them on monday and try it then.
im going for a happy meal .. ( a curry mmmmmmm !)
tkae care
javed

- (#8842) javed, 31 May 03 8:57

Easy answer to that one - Call centres. Depends upon who you get on the phone. Just like any other profession, some employees are more knowledgable than others. Moral is - keep ringing back til you find someone with a brain.

- (#8895) Ian Dunse, 4 Jun 03 1:23

just had aquote from l&v £289 comprehensive.great i thought that's less than i'm paying for third party.so i phoned them to be told that they couldn't insure my 91 royal lounge as it was an automatic.
check your insurance!

- (#9026) Vince, 8 Jun 03 15:31

Hi

I got a reasonable quote from Tesco, but they do require an immobiliser

Cheers

- (#9151) Colin, 16 Jun 03 4:14

hi everyone
Just thought ide let all you hiace owners out there know that after being refused insurance from six companies on the grounds of my engine being too big (2.77 ltr)I found a company willing to insure me not only that but it was only eight pounds more than the insurance on my astra 1.6 fully comp 3 yrs no claims on a hiace super custom deluxe 8 seater 4wd 1992 only 488 pounds from lifesure group o1480474604 hope this helps someone out there see ya

- (#9372) pete, 27 Jun 03 16:56

I rang Liv.Vic, and was told there is no such model as a 2.0 Tdi Auto, and that all Town Aces are manual only !!! I mentioned that I had driven it to work that morning and don't remember having to change gear once :o) - They didnt want to know.

Anyway, I rang Footman James - 0845 458 6791 - and was given a quote, without an immobiliser - £232 - That'll do fine mister..!!!!!

Happy Days

- (#9373) Martin Green, 28 Jun 03 1:00

Must be down to who you speak to, got mine thro L&V for £215 including under 25 extra driver, yes Ok I've got 71.5% NCD and am the wrong side of 50, documents say Toyota Townace(import) no mention of gearbox or immobilisor

- (#9374) Andy Lees, 28 Jun 03 2:21

Andy, they said their quote system was updated a month ago, so if you got yours before then that may be the reason ????

- (#9375) Martin Green, 28 Jun 03 2:39

i had rang liv&vic yesterday to be told that they are stoping insurance on imports so i rang this new number in javed,s post different number for L&V (0870 2422405) so i cheekly decieded to ring again and GUESS what !!!! £305 f/c for toyota townace 2.0 td
me and wife 5 yrs nc the best ive done so far. im fed up with ringing round so ive accepted they didnt ask for an imobilizer or alarm what a good site this is
carl
- (#9428) carl daley, 1 Jul 03 14:07

After many quotes fo over £600, and many other places that won`t touch imports or MPV`s (inc Norwich Union), I found Lifesure ....01480-474604 (www.lifesure.co.uk).
£360 (£300 excess). 33 yr old male, 4 yrs ncb. And they didn`t care if it had an alarm or not.

- (#9429) Storm, 2 Jul 03 19:36

I've been with Norwich Union since I've had my Liteace and have been paying £500+ for FC. I've just had my renewal through at £566.44 for FC + protected NCD insured only. I filled in the web page at www.lifesure.co.uk and they rang me the next morning (08.45). They asked what I'd been quoted so far which I declined to tell them. They said to put my wife down as a named driver as the discount was more (?!). Anyway they quoted me £272.92 FC + protected NCD, £300 excess for myself (47) and my wife (45). I paid them straight away by CC. Thanks for this great site - now to try and get wife to try and drive the 'too big' Liteace!!!! Rgds Keith

- (#9471) Keith Blackmore, 6 Jul 03 6:30

No Problem with Cooperative insurance CIS!
find your local branch.

- (#9472) paul, 6 Jul 03 10:56

Got my insurance from Direct Line surprisingly enough. I think it was about £200 or just under for FC, 7 years NCD and business use for myself and husband. Might be worth a try.........

We just took delivery of a Townie last week having had a HiAce Super Custom which died around 3 or 4 years ago after 17 years of service....... hope the Townie does us as well.

- (#9534) Helen, 9 Jul 03 3:48

you can try the farmers union (nfu mutual) for insurance. i insured mine as a hiace super custom wagon they describe it as a toyota minibus - they know its an import with a 3l (2800cc) diesel engine, immobilizer and 8 seats. £209 last year fully comprehensive - covers travel in mainland europe as will (i think). they are used to insuring weird and wonderful machinery from all over the planet so a mpv is not a problem.
try them on 01825 763578

- (#9535) JenChris, 9 Jul 03 7:08

Thank for all the information. Last year paid 460 with Adrian Flux and I thought that was good with all the extras (recovery etc...). This year they wanted over 100 more. I tried L&V first who gave me a great quote of 270 or 285 depending on whether I have a TD or TDi. How do I tell??

- (#9778) Mike, 19 Jul 03 5:36

If it's a diesel Town/Masterace, it will be a turbo diesel ie, TD. The engine is an indirect injected engine, unlike some (not Townaces) which are TDi, meaning, I think, direct injection. All diesels are "injected" engines but, if you have a petrol engine, I am not sure if there is a fuel injection system fitted or, a straightforward carburettor. If you raise the engine cover, you should see "turbo" embossed on the camshaft cover. If your vehicle is diesel than you have a TD

- (#9779) John Davis, 19 Jul 03 5:50

Does anyone out there know about insurance for an Estima Emina? General insurance is not too much trouble but I am looking for private hire insurance for a chauffer driven hire service. It has been an absolute nightmare for me so far! Any suggestions people?

- (#9582) Alan Bickley, 10 Jul 03 15:22
