(Home) Auto box problem

i have a problem that my townie likes low gears it kicks down way too easily i have adjusted the kickdown cable so that it is fully slackened off but still it changes down too easily. i am going to drain the oil, drop the sump off and clean the filter. how do i refill the gearbox and do i check the oil level with the dipstick pushed fully home. i ask this because the garage i bought it from changed the engine in the vehicle and after i got it home i checked all the levels.with the dipstick to the gearbox fully home the oil level was way over full but if i lined up the v in the catch that locks the dipstick in place with the v on the dipstick it was perfect. which is right? fully home or lined up with th v? - (#298) RICHARD, 16 Jun 01

Fluid level is checked with the dipstick fully inserted. The box is refilled through the dipstick tube (engine running in "P" to check the level, remember)
Check the kickdown adjustment again. Is the cable binding perhaps? Best changes for most are when the cable is slack enough to just touch the pump housing when at idle.
