does 450 kilometers on 44 litres of diesel sound about right for a 2 litre turbo with auto trans and aircon ? - (#397) J Adgo, 1 Jul 01

29mpg? not too bad! - (#398) David Miller, 2 Jul 01

Yep, exactly what mine does (I know cos our fuel gauge is knackered so we always fill up on 450 by trip meter, or when the yellow fuel warning light comes on!) - (#402) Steve FE, 2 Jul 01

I've just done a trip to london & my 2.0TD (CR30)
4x4 / air con did 588.8 km on 46.78 ltrs
The bus was loaded ( I was moving a friend down there ) - (#421) Paul, 3 Jul 01

In my Townie 2ltr diesel turbo, I get about 600K on a full tank.
Unless it's windy, then it will drop to about 550k or so.
Both figures are without a/c on.

Converting to MPG.In a 1992 Lite Ace 2.0 TD on a 450 mile journey, loaded with 4 adults and 4 young'uns I averaged 36MPG. I thought "Could be better " Obviously your right foot plays an important part. Around town careful to keep the revs below 2000 and the Turbo not engauged I believe I get better than this.Have yet to work it out. - (#455) stephen judge, 5 Jul 01

In my 2.0TD Lite Ace travelling 1600KM in the south of Ireland ( up hill and down Dale )over the last 2 weeks, at 70 on motorways, 2 adults 3 kids, fully loaded with all but the kitchen sink I averaged 33MPG ( 53KPG )P.S. Go there, Diesel is only 44-50 pence Sterling depending on where you fill up. - (#605) stephen judge, 19 Jul 01

Hope this site isn't just spacecruisers.............
I am intrested to know what sort of mpg to expect from
a Town ace 2.0 turbo diesel (Driven carefully !) as im considering buying one.
Thanks... - (#1105) David Paddock, 19 Sep 01

I have a Masterace Surf and with 4/6 up on a run I get about 33/35mpg
If you use the a/c this will reduced mpg quite a bit! - (#1106) Barry Thorogood, 19 Sep 01

is 23 mpg out of my 2.0 td litaeace 4wd good or bad if bad what can i do. - (#2481) wick, 9 Mar 02

2.0td master ace, 4x4, manual
30-35 mpg normal
20 mpg with trailer
don't go over the dreaded 100kph dinging, so that keeps economy on the good side... have found that only 10mph more and the mpg goes spiralling down - (#2483) skippy, 9 Mar 02

Is yours Auto or Manual, if Auto 23 Mpg is not unreasonable, all depends how you drive it, spin the Turbo faster down goes the MPG, I tend to get 23-29 round town, depending on driving technique, 30+ on a run, if not thrashing it, or facing a headwind. HTH. Regards Rob. - (#2486) Rob Drinkwater, 10 Mar 02

3-year average, 26-29mpg. If all your filters are clean and the timing is correct, blame it on driving style or injectors... - (#2490) david milller, 10 Mar 02

Drop a bottle of injector cleaner in the next tank of fuel, and try Slick 50.
I use Slick 50 in everything I've ever rode or driven, and I'm told by cleverer people than me that it helps a fair bit. Give it a try... - (#2491) Kevin Savage, 10 Mar 02

I used to bemoan mine for only getting 23mpg. It made it worse to learn there were others getting nearly 40 in theirs. However, I've since learned that 4WD versions are heavier on fuel and most people plod along in theirs and seem to average 27-29. I really drive mine and find it difficult to keep the speed down but regularly cruise at 120k and sometimes touch 130k so I've only got myself to blame. I've found that raising tyre pressures to 40-42 psi helps and adding injector cleaner at each service gives me 24/25 mpg.

Hi! I from Russia, city Tomsk (the Siberia). Want to learn of consuption of the diesel oil on your minibus in your country. All depend on mode of the usages and place, where you are found, so me interesting this hear. Also indicate the parameters of the machine. On my Master ace Surf (91), 2C-T (1974 sm3), Mechanical gearbox, 10 litres on 100 km (city, summer), 12-13 litres on 100 km (city, winter), 8,5 litres on 100 km (route)

Good luck on road!

Mosh! from Russia
- (#5303) Mosh, 29 Aug 02

Mosh,
Consumption around the same with my Townace automatic.
Clive

- (#5304) clive, 29 Aug 02

Sound about right, Mosh. People on this site seem to get between 22-35 miles per gallon 12.4- 7.8 l/100km, depending on driving, whether auto or manual, etc, for the diesel.
My average is about 28mpg (99.75 l/100km), for a 2ct 4x4 auto.

I'm looking to buy a Townace, but am concerned at the possible cost of running such a beast. Can anyone advise which models are best for fuel consumption and if there are any to avoid. I am assuming the 2.0 DT 2WD manual is likely to be best, but I do need air con. What sort of MPG figures can I expect. I currently run a 2.0i Volvo 740 which is under powered but pretty good on the old juice for such a large machine. I shall be looking around the G/H plate region I think.

- (#5564) Tony Frampton, 18 Sep 02

Tony
A topic that has been raised a few times here in the past. The 2WD manual appears to be the most frugal as you suggest with reported figures of up to 40mpg. You may find the Liteace to be slightly better being a little smaller than the Townace.

All models boast dual zone aircon. Also if you think the Volvo is underpowered you'll cringe if you get a Townace. It's a sedate cruiser not a racer.

- (#5565) Ian Dunse, 19 Sep 02

With my 4wd TD Masterace, H reg, I get around 30/35 but, my motoring (which suits the vehicle) is relatively sedate and I think I am flying at 65mph. These vehicles are, in my opinion, very satisfying but, also, quite challenging, and Ian's description is spot on.
However, if you want a REALLY different vehicle, with a specification that Espace, Galaxy and Picasso owners can only dream about, the Town/Masterace etc would fit the bill and, initially, compared to many other MPV's, the bill is quite small. If you are "mechanically challenged" and have to pay some less than enthusiastic (the trade don't seem to like them much)garage a lot of money for repair and routine maintenance, the Townace might not be the vehicle for you.

Hello all,

Well its been a while since i've posted a note. i've had my townie(liteace really) since november last year and i've not had a problem with it. Long distance no trouble, not overheating, its great!(may it stay that way! touch wood)

My only moan is i'm not getting the mpg i expected from it. It being a '90 liteace 2L T Diesel, i expected 30>35mpg, but i'm only getting 25mpg. I've tryed driving it softly softly and it makes no difference at all.

Any help is again much appreciated...i don't know where to start, my first diesel!

Thanks, NiK C.

- (#6704) NiK C., 11 Jan 03

Nik,
Others, much more knowledgeable than I am, will, no doubt, have some answers for you. In my case, when I got my my 1990 Masterace (2CT engine), about two years ago, it did not seem too good on fuel. When I did the head gasket/belt change etc, I paid particular attention to valve clearances (shimmed), cleaned the injectors and had the fuel pump settings checked & adjusted by a local diesel specialist. Additionally, I always use a fuel additive which, I feel, does help with pump lubrication and injector condition. Since then, on general motoring but, never over, say, 60/65 mph, even on motorways, fuel consumption is always above the 32/35 mpg mark which, I feel, is satisfactory for the vehicle. The fuel pump adjustments are critical I feel and, you can attempt this yourself. However, the local specialists have the testing equipment and, most important, the "know how"

- (#6705) John Davis, 12 Jan 03

my townie does 20mpg round town 28 on longer journeys and has passed emisions test at mot time, remember it is a heavy car 1600kg and relatively small engine, mines done aprox 84000miles.

- (#6888) gary hope, 22 Jan 03

Our automatic 2.2 TD Townie gives 28mpg fairly consistently, doing the school run, shopping and country roads.

Hi to all

Mine is Townace Super Extra Limited 2wd Model 1996. The only problem is I only got 6.32 km/liter (17.85 miles/gal. Is it true that new import cars from Japan are set up to run rich (in fuel)? Any suggestions? With regards to the Townace's performance, it's OK.

charlie r.

- (#10836) Charlie R., 22 Sep 03 21:58

Charlie if you are talking diesel then yes that's pretty poor. You should be returning over 30mpg with a 2WD. You can fiddle with the mixture screw and the screw at the top of the pump but to be only getting 17 would infer something more severe. I'd be inclined to hunt down a diesel specialist and get the pump set up properly. Other important factors with a diesel engine that will effect consumption are
regular oil and oil and air filter changes.

- (#10837) Ian Dunse, 23 Sep 03 1:43

Thanks Ian for the info. I've already have the oil, oil filter and the air filter changed. You mean the fuel pump to be calibrated? Anything else to be checked? I'm not yet familiar with diesel engine.

- (#10838) Charlie R., 23 Sep 03 20:21

Yes the fuel pump. It is calibrated to pump the right amount of fuel at the right time. Requires specialist kit to set up. There have been some contributers who have found specialist centres to do this at a reasonable price. Depends upon where you live. I forget the name but you might find it in AceAnswers.
