Townace SE 2.0TD Auto 4WD CR30 (G)
Just got 2 new tyres fitted, wheels balanced & tracking done. Now pulls to left and tyres squeel on turns.
Used tracking quoted by David in message titled "Worn Tyres" dated 5/20/101 below. Repeated here for ref':-
Settings for CR30
KPI 12 deg 25min
camber 10 min+- 45
toe 0+- 12 min =+- 1mm
caster 2deg 50 min +- 45
Also used tyre pressures of 33psi all round.
Also notice David mentions 2x4 is different to 4x4 under "Fast Idle, Tracking" dated 6/02/101 below.
Can anyone confirm the 4x4 settings? - (#420) Ray, 3 Jul 01

the settings I have posted are for 1989-1992 CR30. Should apply to any other CR30, though. What kind of tyres did you get? Are they load index 90 or above? Try increasing tyre pressures to around 37psi. The squeal may be compound related. Is it pulling at all times, even on the overtaking lane? - (#422) David Miller, 4 Jul 01

I never got round to sorting this out.
Load rating of new tyres (on front) is 100/102, speed rating is P (93mph).
I have done nothing, but the squeeling has stopped (must have been 'new rubber' syndrome) but van pulls slightly to left still (less now though).
Useful tip
look at www.tyres-online.co.uk for excellent info all about tyres, treads, wheels etc (quite techy and extremely useful).

Have noticed my 2.0TD 1990 4WD Townie seems to be pulling to the left slightly - have not noticed any signs of abnormal tyre wear but would like to get everything checked before this starts to happen.
Cannot find any info on steering geometry anywhere though so has anyone any ideas on what the tracking should be set at ?
Any info greatly appreciated. - (#1500) pete, 25 Nov 01

Pete,
All the figures were posted by David , and confirmed by Ray, in a previous enquiry. You will find this under "Tracking" on Dave Masons splendid archive sie as above, ie, ace.webspace.fish.co.uk - (#1501) John Davis, 25 Nov 01

Also, check the front ride height, and run the tyres slightly over pressure. - (#1503) david miller, 26 Nov 01

Has anybody got the details for the Tracking of a 88/9 4x4 Townace, as mine has tyre wear on only one side, & I want to sort it out before getting some new tyres ??
Thanks.. Paul - (#1733) Paul, 29 Dec 01

Paul, These figures have been given previously and you will find them on the splendidly archived Ace Answers list, via the above link - (#1735) John Davis, 30 Dec 01

But accept that tyre pressures and the type of driving you do will affect the wear pattern also. - (#1736) david miller, 30 Dec 01

How is the tracking adjusted on a townie? On previous cars I've owned it's a matter of loosening the locknut then turning the trackrod. I tried this on the townie but the rod only turns about 45 degrees in either direction. Any help appreciated. - (#2561) Leigh Wright, 26 Mar 02

The track-rod needs to rotate within the trackrod-end. Spanner flats on the rod for that purpose. Might be rusted up. - (#2566) david miller, 27 Mar 02

Could someone kindly advise re the tracking figures which are posted on the Ace Answers site. For the CR30 4WD, do I read the posting correctly and should the correct adjustment be neutral, ie, with no toe in or toe out, with 1 mm maximum tolerance ? - (#2606) John Davis, 31 Mar 02

Yes, john, that's the figures that Toyota GB aquired for me. - (#2610) david miller, 31 Mar 02

Thanks for the confirmation David - (#2614) John Davis, 1 Apr 02

Does anybody out there know the settings for the tracking and maybe the camber angles.Nobody around here seems to know these settings , not even Toyota so i`m stuck and my tyres have rounded edges . I need to replace the fronts but i`m worried that these will end up being in the same condition .

Thanks very much.

geoff before you go any further check the ride hieght is correct as this alters the camber ..the torsion bars all go weak and it sits low at the front (look familiar?).. measure from the floor to the lower wishbone bolt middle 262mm is correct
the tracking is the same as a spacecruiser so is the camber - i set my tracking dead parralell and put 2 or 3 psi more in the tyres - check the upper and lower balljoints in the wishbones for wear too

Geoff,
This information will be found in Ace answers, under "Tracking", from which, I took this extract.

"Settings for CR30
KPI 12 deg 25min
camber 10 min+- 45
toe 0+- 12 min =+- 1mm
caster 2deg 50 min +- 45
Also used tyre pressures of 33psi all round.

Can anyone tell me the correct settings for the tracking on the front wheels of my Toyota masterace surf. I am sure the information should be on the board somewhere but I am unable to find it Many thanks

I've just bought 1988 Liteace imported 1999

Had 5 attempts at setting tracking with ATS, they're using Hiace settings.

I saw this message:

Tracking Settings for 1989-1992 YR30 CR30 4x4
Townace Auto 4WD
KPI 12 deg 25min
camber 10 min+- 45
toe 0+- 12 min =+- 1mm
caster 2deg 50 min +- 45

Anyone know settings for 1988 1988 Liteace 2.0l turbo diesel??
I'm about to drive 1,000 miles pulling to the left.
Cheers
Brian

Same settings for yours, yes.

- (#10709) david miller, 2 Sep 03 7:18

i have a 1992 2.0l turbo diesel auto that also pulls to the left have also found that none of the inertia seat belts work, also have coolent problems only on the motorway .
have you any similar problems

- (#11215) keith, 14 Oct 03 11:55

Keith

You would get a higher profile if you had started a new thread.

Pulling to left - if only happens when braking then check your front brakes. Probably a sticking caliper, give it a good clean. If when running then get it tracked before your tyre wears down.

Seat belts - these are usually sealed units IIRC so if not working they will need to be replaced. A sharp tug should lock the belt. If it doesn't then the mechanism will probably be worn.

Coolant problems - read through archives. Plenty of anecdotes and tests that should help you out.

I have a townace TD G reg, which needs the tracking done last time i got had loads of trouble finding someone to do it and ended up with McCarthy Sidcup at the pricely sum of £90 + VAT. At least by going to them the first time i now know the measurements that its got to go between but i begrudge paying the price quoted (sounds expensive to me but maybe i am wrong) I am in the Sidcup/Bromley area does anyone else know of any other garages in the area that might be easier on the purse?

- (#11822) Lisa, 17 Nov 03 9:04

Kwikfit/ ATS?

- (#11823) david miller, 17 Nov 03 9:56

Tracking with a 4 wheel laser set up should be around £20 - £25 maybe plus VAT, at Kwikfit etc as David suggests. Now I know Toyota charge, but for 10 minutes work????? Are you sure it was tracking/wheel alignment, and not caster and or camber adjustment?

- (#11824) Clive (Bristol), 17 Nov 03 10:16

Lisa. Yes, as others say, that's an exorbitant figure for just a tracking check and adjustment so, perhaps, there was other work. The tyre shops are equipped with the equipment to do this and, sometimes, the only problem they have is knowing the correct measurements. How long ago did you have it done? It seems a bit strange that it is needed again. It's the kind of thing which is very rarely required.

- (#11825) John Davis, 17 Nov 03 14:53

Yes sure it is only the tracking, i have the invoice in front of me from March this year when they did me a "favour" and only charged £70.50! but because i didnt have the measurements no one else could help, saying that last time even other branches of McCarthys claimed that they couldnt do it cos they didnt have the measurements???

Ive never had a problem with my tyres before at all but i have just noticed that both front tyres are wearing on the same side not an issue i have ever had before and even as a girlie driver im not one for smacking into every kerb i have the good fortune to meet. Thanks for the help you guys i think you have confirmed what i suspected "I was done!"

- (#11997) Lisa, 27 Nov 03 13:27

Out of interest what is the difference between tracking and caster/camber adjustment (sorry to be thick, new to all this lark).

- (#11998) Lisa, 27 Nov 03 13:31

Tracking - wheels pointing the correct way, in a Townace that is straight ahead in line with the rear wheels.
Camber is the angle that the wheels have from the vertical, some wheels look like they are spread out at the bottom when looking from the front.
Castor is a bit harder to explain, it is another angle of adjustment within the steering. Think of where the wheel is within the wheel arch, should be near enough center, move it a mm or two forward or backward and you have steering problems.
Mostly to do with the front wheels but can also be applied to the rear. Remember the back end of a Triumph Spitfire and how the wheels flared out?

- (#11999) Clive (Bristol), 27 Nov 03 18:16

Kwick fit replied to me and wont track imports unless you give them the spec, in case anyone out there needs it the spec given to me by McCarthy Toyota (Sidcup) for my G reg Townace TD (front axle only) is as follows:
Min Max
Caster Left & Right 1.50 2.50
Camber Left & Right -0.40 0.20
Toe Left & Right 0.12 0.36
SAI Left & Right 10.36 (no min/max given)

Hope it helps someone.
