anyone know of a place to buy a new rear exhaust section for a townace 1989 ..the only ones i can get are for a liteace van ..and they dont fit ! - (#478) J ADGO, 8 Jul 01

hi,i needed a rear exhaust for my masterace surf, after lots of searching only RRG TOYOTA in salford could get me one(bit pricey though £200).i dont know where you live but you may have to bite the bullet and order through main dealer ugh!!!! - (#479) dave linney, 8 Jul 01

got mine from a main dealer - approx £200 I think.
there are no patterned ones (as far as I know) but at least you'll know that it'll last 3-4 times longer, as they are made thicker by the manufacturer - (#480) skippy, 8 Jul 01

Try Tyre Trax, 271 Portland Road, South Norwood,London SE25 4XB. Tel 020 8656 9992.
I bought a stainless steel exhaust complete for around £300 this time last year for my 2.0 TD Townie 4x4 CR30, fitted - (#481) Steve, 8 Jul 01

Steve's got it right, there are a number of distributors for Powerflow exhausts, all stainless, made to your spec, while you wait. I had a pipe made up from the flexpipe back, £175. £50 will make the frontpipe when needed. Lifetime guarantee!! - (#482) David Miller, 8 Jul 01

David
Don't you need to buy the full system in stainless at the same time in order to get the lifetime guarantee?
Ian - (#486) Ian Dunse, 9 Jul 01

The lifetime guarantee covers the installed components- all are stainless, inc welds and hangers. The proviso is an annual free inspection, AFAIK - (#487) David Miller, 9 Jul 01

David
That's useful to note. I was always under the impression that suppliers had a thing about connecting mild to stainless and hence would only guarantee a full system. This has put me off stainless in the past because it seemed overkill to replace components that still had plenty of life in them, especially the front part that connects to the manifold, which usually last a very long time. Glad you've dispelled that myth!
Thanks

Any ideas where I can get a exhaust for my 1989 Toyota Masterace surf 4WD. - (#1808) Gary Shannon, 4 Jan 02

You can spend £450 or so with your local dealer, or find your local agent for "Powerflow" stainless steel systems, and have one made to measure with a lifetime guarantee for 2/3 of that... - (#1812) david miller, 4 Jan 02

Mid section box of my exhaust fell fowl to the dreaded rust, went to a specialist in Burscough near Southport after picking his brains I repaired the section by cutting the box and a bit of pipe out and inserting a lenth of "wash line post" into the gap works a treat !!!! total cost £5.50.....
The engineer also said that when it comes to the back section, to use the exhaust off a toyota camry and a little adaptation....cheap eh!!!!! - (#2510) Chris, 11 Mar 02

Hi,
Need a new back box for my 1994 Townie 2.2TD, anyone know anywhere that sells them?

- (#3437) Dave Freer, 19 Jun 02

Many regulars on this site (including me) swear by Powerflow exhausts. In the region of £320 for a full system, stainless and guaranteed for life (will also do part systems). Let us know whereabouts you are and maybe someone can point you to the nearest stockist.

- (#3438) Ian Dunse, 19 Jun 02

Ive just (about 10 days ago) had a quote for the rear section of exhuast for my 92 liteace 2.0td from pentagon toyota in rotherham for aprox £105+vat apparently in stainless steel, but toyota japan don't expext delivery till end of june.Doesnt sound bad to me considering its the biggest part of the exhuast (2 large boxesand up to middle of bus)

- (#3446) mitch, 19 Jun 02

1. where is the nearest powerflow stockist in the bolton, greater manchester area.

2. what are the part no's for the exhaust

- (#3467) dipak karadia, 21 Jun 02

Thanks for the replys. Ian I live near Bristol, so if you know of a Powerflow stockist near me I would be grateful for the info. I didn't really want to spend quite that much, as I may need a new windscreen! (got a small chip in it, and although it passed the last MOT-which was done by the dealer who supplied the van-I think it might be a bit iffy this year)

- (#3468) Dave Freer, 21 Jun 02

Dave,
Not Powerflow but a UK company try http://www.exhausts.uk.com/ Longlife Exhausts Falfield Gloucester (up the A38). Not used them myself yet but a friend had a Celica done and has got heaps more power. Makes a custom build to the car, not standard parts forced to fit. Worth a look.

- (#3469) Clive, 21 Jun 02

Cheers Clive, will have a look at their site. Thanks very much for the tip.

- (#3471) Dave Freer, 21 Jun 02

£389 inc for a full system or £179 inc just for the back box.....

- (#3473) Dave Freer, 21 Jun 02

thanks for the reply Ian,, just contacted Wheels at Ibstock as mentioned in an earlier thread, they have given me a quote of £240 plus vat for stainless steel and i didn't have to explain to him what a townace was, so he seems to have worked with them before. Out of curiosity i rang my local Toyota dealer and total price would be £417 and £150 fitting. So it is worth me travelling down to Ibstock from Stoke On Trent. Tried a closer powerflow dealer in West Bromwich, but it was to much Mmmmm Aahhh and to many stupid questions about the vehicle and then told possibly £330 but we will have to see it first. The contact details are,, (Wheels at Ibstock, Ibstock Leicestershire tel, 01530 261321.
Thanks again Ian

- (#3502) henry, 24 Jun 02

Thought it might be useful to others,,,i have located what seems to be power flows latest web site as there seems to be a lot of difficulty accessing the previous one. www.topgear.co.uk/powerflow.html

- (#3503) henry, 24 Jun 02

"quote of £240 plus vat for stainless steel"
Henry. Yes you are right, Jeff Fowkes Wheels at Ibstock are familiar with our type of vehicle and are a very helpful Company. The Powerflow man (Steve) uses part of their premises on a franchise basis.
He has done Townaces before and, recently, my Masterace, and knows the correct part numbers for ordering from Powerflow central stores. Just so that you know what you are getting, the quote is probably for the two exhaust boxes, tail pipe and connecting pipes, and will likely not include the downpipe from the turbo to the flexible joint. This part of the exhaust is usually very substantial anyway and, if your vehicle is diesel, it is probably still very sound.

- (#3504) John Davis, 25 Jun 02

Hi John
as you say the price does not include the down pipe, yes it was steve i spoke too. Thanks for the reply you have given me confidence that i have made the right choice.

- (#3516) henry, 25 Jun 02

Apart form Powerflow.....has anyone out there tried any other firms to make the full system for our Townies ??
I've found a place in St Annes( nr Blackpool)
called Permazaust..
I'll be going this week to see about a system price..
- (#5997) Paul Morgan, 3 Nov 02

Had one made up here in Weston-super-Mare, my local exhaust/tyre depot (Formula 1st) used a Granada back box and welded the brackets from the original Townie exhaust on. Cost £85, sounds OK and no loss in power etc.

- (#6786) Dave Freer, 17 Jan 03

i am looking as well for the 2 back boxes for my masterace 4x4 and i have come across a range of estimates £250 to £400 but i may of stumbled on to a exhaust dealer where one of my best mates work,i am told that the exhaust on my 4x4 is easy to tackle and i intend to diy it,i will let you know how i got on
dennis

- (#6787) DENNIS, 17 Jan 03

Dennis - I replaced the exhaust on my space cruiser looks much the same on the Town Ace. While being a simple bolt up job getting the old bolts out needed an angle grinder. Getting the rear out and in required the back end to be very high in the air, easy up on a lift, no so easy on a trolley jack with extra blocks. If you do it yourself, or get it done, insist on the correct gaskets to be fitted, a few pence each from Toyota.

- (#6788) Clive, 18 Jan 03

clive- thanks for that i am now considering what you say about the back having to be high, angle grinder and fitting new gaskets no probs, dennis

- (#6789) DENNIS, 18 Jan 03

The exhaust has failed on my 93 Liteace where the pipe attaches to rear silencer. The exhaust appears solid, does any one reckon that this could be welded back together? I'm sure that if I take it to a garage they are going to want to replace the rear section.

- (#6318) Rob Storer, 7 Dec 02

the weld is generally the weakest part of the system, as it's done AFTER the pipes are aluminised... If it's ground back to fresh metal, it should weld OK. Might need a short tube to fill the gap tho.

- (#6319) david miller, 7 Dec 02

My Garage - Bullivants of Derby - has just repaired a similar fault - installed about 3/4ft of new pipe added a new tail pipe but kept the old silencer.

Cheaper than having a full exhaust installed

- (#6320) Jim Grice, 7 Dec 02

Thanks for the advice, I'll try and get it fixed

- (#6321) Rob Storer, 8 Dec 02

Just dropped it down to the local tyre and exhaust place and they are welding it up for £30

- (#6322) Rob Storer, 8 Dec 02

Help! the exhaust on my 1991 townace diesel has just parted with the tail end silencer (the silencer is not repairable)the local exhaust centre suggest if they cannot locate matching tail box, pipe and mid box which is all one section, they might braise bits of other systems together.
Is this going to effect engine efficiency and performance?
Does anyone know where to locate proper replacement part? urgent replies please

- (#7118) JIM LEWIS (Bristol), 9 Feb 03

I've only just become the owner of a Masterace Surf, and I am about to have a go at the dealer I bought from last saturday, as the exhaust has just fell apart, I looked on the ace answers site for exhaust prices and was stunned at the cost, so I trawled the nat and found a site called bbcspares, they are advertising front downpipes for 2&4 WD Townaces at £66, and rear silencers at £150. seems much more reasonable than £500 from kwikfit

- (#7264) Ian Griffiths, 16 Feb 03

follow this one it goes to the right place

- (#7265) ian griffiths, 16 Feb 03

From the downpipe and the flexible joint onwards, the two boxes and the tail pipe would cost, fitted, around £222/250 in stainless steel from Powerflow, with a liftime guarantee. Their agents know the Townace requirements, part No's etc. The downpipe, from the turbo, is pretty substantial anyway and does not usually need replacing. If you end up paying for the exhaust, or even if you don't, the stainless system is, I think, much better that the rapidly rusting conventional systems fitted by the the high st "specialists"

- (#7266) John Davis, 16 Feb 03

Search the web for Longlife Exhausts, go to there site for the nearest dealer, and go there.

A hand made stainless steel exhaust for the townie cost me £320 fitted, lifetime warranty, good value I thought!!!

- (#7267) Steve, 16 Feb 03

Jim
There is a long life exhaust place at Falfield, have a look in the yellow pages. Otherwise I took mine to Formula 1st in Weston-super-Mare, they made me up a rear section using a Granada box for £95 seemed to be fine, they said that they had done 3 or 4 others.

- (#7326) Dave Freer, 18 Feb 03

The exhaust on my Liteace crumbled to dust as is usually the case.

I bit the bullet and had a local specialist make me a stainless steel exhaust. It was the best money I spent - trouble free 4 years later and only expensive at the outset.

- (#7327) Mike Tomkinson, 19 Feb 03

I just had some work done on my 1990 Masterace surf, and they had to replace the rear exhaust (it's about 3/4ths the length of the van) but I noticed they were having some problems with it. He said he couldn't find the exact part but found one close to it (not an import part) but had to make some adjustments to the fastening brackets to make it fit. They were on the opposite side. So he welded new one's on. It appears to be fine and to run fine, but I was just wondering if there might be anything I should be concerned about with it not being the exact part.
I also noticed a bit of black smoke when starting it up and when I really have to accelerate fast. Could this have something to do with it not being the exact factory exhaust or perhaps I never noticed it before, because I just bought it. I heard the smoke is common with these vans.
Thanks for any help guys, and thanks for persuading me into buying this incredible vehicle, me and my family love it!!!

- (#7813) Drew Davis, 26 Mar 03

I am thinkin of getting an aftermarket exhaust to improve gas flow, and hence more power - I have been quoted $280 Aus (I'm in Perth, Western Australia) for a 2 1/4" custom system. I am saving my pennies now.

They do make a bit of smoke, not noticable in normal running, but you a get puff if you dump it - useful for stopping tailgaters!
They also get smokey if you miss a service - a good reminder.

Interesting address, want to tell us more?

Dave.

- (#7814) Dave, 27 Mar 03

Just to let you know that instead of paying 460 quid for a new toyota exhaust system I went to Pipecraft at 22-23 Orion Court Cranes Farm Road, Basildon and in 1.5 hours for £220 they built me a complete system in 120 gauge steel (I'm told this is better than the stuff Kwik fit use ? although obviously not as good as stainless). Book in advance on 01268 285535.
Immediate improvement in performance. Before this I was getting 20mpg around town and 21.5mpg on a long run. Just after getting it done I clocked 26.5 mpg on a trip to Wales and back and now seem to be getting 23.5mpg in town. Having been severely disappointed with the MPG when I first got the Townace this improvement has been very welcome (its more impressive if you talk in terms of percentage improvement !!)
- (#8105) Gary Pattimore, 14 Apr 03 14:46

I got a bit worried looking at some of the prices quoted around here for exhausts, However I just got quoted £184 (plus £2.50 for the gasket) For the whole rear and middle section (i.e. not including the bit from the engine to the flange) for my 2ltr Turbo diesel Towanace (Model Q-CR21G-PEZX) from a main Toyota dealer, there should be vat on top but when I mentioned that I was possibly looking at a stainless (£250+vat inc. fitting) he said he'd knock the vat off. Toyota part numbers BTW are 17405-64061 for the exhaust and 90917-06045 for the gasket.

- (#8787) Martin King, 27 May 03 12:17

I just got an exhaust, gaskets and clamp from toyota for my hiace (LH107).
They supplied the 'new improved version'.
The flexi section is a ceramic ball/knuckle joint instead of flexi pipe (which was fitted lower on the original).
This knuckle joint fouls the ATM cooling pipes and the new bracket (which would have fitted the old version) bears no relationship to the new pipe.
They insist the computer tells them they have supplied the right parts and are jubious of my complaint as I am not a mechanic for a living.
The only way to fit it is bend the ATM pipe out of the way (easier than bending the exhaust)and slice up and refabricate the bracket (which holds the exhaust to the bellhousing)to extend its reach.
I'll go for the 'not as toyota intended' approach as I'm not driving it around with a blowing exhaust for weeks (no UK stock)while they re-order only to discover they are wrong again.
Yes,I am having a gripe - but if toyota cant supply original spec (after you pay up frront and wait weeks)then why not get a stainless from elsewhere - As these vehicles get older and more parts become unavailable, going elswhere will become 'par for the course' anyway.
Hmmmph
Chris

townie started whistling yesterday, not a tune i recognised!

- (#10048) William, 27 Jul 03 14:13

Help
Can anyone out there help me with a complete exhuast system, I have the down pipe but need the rest and object to paying £225 for a new one..

- (#11971) Adrian, 24 Nov 03 10:31

Other than buying from a scrappy there isn't much way of keeping the cost down. However if you do end up parting with that kind of money make sure you buy a stainless one such as from Powerflow. At least you will have a lifetime guarantee from your investment.

- (#11972) Ian Dunse, 24 Nov 03 11:07

HI,ADRIAN you could try altham car dismantlers on 01254383642 accrington old news was that there were 4 townies there, it seems that you have to drive to find bits!
