(Home) Front fog lights catch 22 situation

When I purchased my Townace, the front yellow fog lights didn't function. However upon taking it back to the garage they were a bit reluctant to connect them as they said they are not compliant with UK Law and I could fail my MOT due to these. I stated that as far as I was to believe if you have lights fitted as standard with a switch built in they have to work otherwise you fail your MOT.
Can someone tell me who is right. - (#503) Russ, 11 Jul 01

Front fog lights are non- obligatory. They will not be tested at MOT, AFAIK
they are wires through the light switch in accordance with UK regs anyway. - (#505) David Miller, 11 Jul 01

Funny how one "mechanic" will tell a different story from another. Look at it like this, a number of car manufacturers incorporate front fog lights into vehicles as standard (Uk spec) and until recently it was trendy to add front fogs/spots (you must have seen old mini-coopers with big light bars on the front with some spotty kid in the driver's seat thinking he's at Le Mans or somewhere). So having front fogs can hardly be illegal can it?

When I had my first m.o.t. done, it failed because the side lights did not work. Bulbs were removed upon import.
I argued with them as I had been driving without them for a year, and luckily for me, even though the garage I bought the Townie had moved on, this gargage was also owned by the same owner.
So, they (free of charge) rewired and supplied bulbs to get the side lights working to comply with m.o.t. regulations, they then wired up the front fog lights in conjuction with the side lights as in their opinion, the side lights could not be seen from the front of the vehicle very well when in use.
They then passed the vehicle.
So now, my side lights are both the front fogs and side lights.
Suits me as I am now more visible.
