(Home) Acceleration poor, black smoke, turbo boost

Dear all ,my turbo comes in at the slightest throttle opening - the yellow light on the rev counter mostly only goes out on the over run .I know from reading previous sections on this page that adjusting the diagphagm screw anti clock slightly will reduce the acclelaration however is this the cause of my turbo being overactive? //and also would it account for my 28 mpg fuel consumption ,lastly does anyone know if this is the adjustment they make when the bosche fuel centre people set the pump up when the use the probe up the exhaust method or is that another adjuster on the pump itself ..kind regards ..jim - (#547) J Adgo, 15 Jul 01

28mpg is OK, depending on how you drive...
The adjustment for the smoke test probe could by done either on the "smoke screw" that we're talking about, or on the Maximum fuel scre, at the rear of the pump.
The performance of your turbo is normal, the light probably comes on under hard acceleration at around 1700rpm?
The big test for these engines is the mirror on the tailgate. Can you see black smoke coming out the exhaust? if so, something needs adjusted. Has the timing been checked recently? - (#548) David Miller, 15 Jul 01

Dave , ta for the info , i have no smoke problems at all , however i feel the turbo is overwilling and it has no compulsion to operate at low throttle openings ,the accelaration is very good , i will leave the adjustment at the rear of the pump to the bosche people, however as long as i mark the present position of the fuel stop screw on the top then adjusting this slightly can be undertaken in the knowledge i can return it to its original position should it prove unsuccessful - (#549) J Adgo, 15 Jul 01
