(Home) Central locking (Sp+)

I have a 1990 space cruiser and the central locking has stopped working. Is it easy to get a wiring diagram.
also most of the door locks are very stiff and the ignition barrel will not lock. Can you get replacemnt locks ?. Why do all the boot doors rust so bad. - (#567) Steve Selfe, 17 Jul 01

Is it a UK spacecruiser? If so, wiring diagram is mayby, parts should be yes. Might just be the key, though. Go to a good locksmith, and have a new key made from the number. - (#568) David Miller, 18 Jul 01

I'll see if the manual covers a wiring diagram for the C/L when I get home tonight and get back to you. Could be something as simple as a bad earth. Tracing the fault is not so simple. Go round all the door locks with WD40, remove door panels and spray all components and work it in well. Ignition switch could be worn or the key could be worn so a new key may fix it. Tailgate doors, yes mine rusted and once ot gets a hold you've had it unless you feel up to removing the glass and treating the rust - a common complaint with the SpaceCruiser, a "design feature". It's better on the Townace as the glass curves more and doesn't puddle the same on the window rubber.

I have been warned to beware WD40, and the like, totally "gumming up" vehicle door and "ignition" locks. I always use a light, graphite-loaded easing/penetrating oil.
This warning may only apply to certain makes/types and not to Toyota but I am told of at least one make (Vauxhall?) whose warranty on new or replacement locks is voided if WD40 etc have been used because they had so many brought back. - (#572) Dave Mason, 18 Jul 01

You maybe right but for the past 20+ years of servicing my own cars, I've always made a point of lubricating my door locks, hinges etc with WD40 at every service, mainly due to its easy availability, and never had a problem. Not too old to be re-educated though!

I am an electronics engineer and would not use WD40 for cleaning electronic contacts, it can attract dirt and cause a similar or worse problems. But for door locks and the like if there are no contacts inside then it's wonderful stuff. It has a good flushing action.
As for your central locking problem I have had direct experience on that with my Masterace. When I picked mine up from the dealer the central locking did not work but I did not notice this until a few weeks later. The dealer I purchased it from was about 70 miles away so I thought I would try and fix it myself. To cut a long story short it took me months to locate it to a missing control box that had been removed by the garage to make it easier for them tofit the switch for the rear fog light and they forgot to replace it. I contacted the garage and they eventuraly sent me two control boxes. The first one only partial worked but the second worked OK. However, I thought I would try and fix the first one for a spare. It turned out to be one of three 5 amp relays inside the box. The box is located under the dashboard near to where the cable from the door enters the door pilar of the car. This might be of use to some one if it does not fix your problem. - (#688) Patrick Adams, 29 Jul 01
