(Home) Clocking

I have 90K on my clock and after my recent overhaul my mechanic said that the things that have gone wrong with my Ace are quite common with a vehicle that has done 90 miles. I pointed out to him that it was Ks and he hid a laugh. I asked him if he thought it might have ben clocked and he just smiled. How can I tell?Any recomendations on an examiner? - (#588) Gwyn Wilde, 18 Jul 01

Hard to say. might have happened in japan. Are the screw heads in the middle of the speedo black, or have they burrs on them?
Remember that a true figure is 90kkm of taxiing around Tokyo, idling, crawling through traffic etc, is hard on an engine... - (#594) David Miller, 19 Jul 01

Mechanics learn the 'hide a laugh' at mechanics school........and in their second year they learn the' draw in a long breath, shake head and say corr you have a big problem here but i can fix it for you!' - (#597) Bill, 19 Jul 01

mine is up to 177,000kms (110,000 miles) and running just perfect
dunno about Toyota, but most diesel's are built to be good for about 200,000 miles - (#602) skippy, 19 Jul 01

One never really knows for sure but you can normally get a feel for if you have a genuine low mileage vehicle by looking at the wear and cleanliness of various components such as engine and compartment, worn pedal rubbers and mats, condition of upholstery, whether the driver's seat sags, marks on headlining and whether what appear to be manufacturer's original parts very much in evidence for brakes and the like. Having said that mine had 62k km on the clock when I bought it and everything looked very pristine. Can't say that now 20 months later at 86k and after my lot have trashed it, together with supermarket trolley dents etc.!

Dunno if its the same on older models but I have an L Reg and recently had to change some bulbs in the drivers display. Got a bit of a shock as there are no speedo cables behind the dash which means its all electric which could explain why our friends townace with 45K (K Reg) on the clock is plagued with engine and turbo problems. - (#678) Russ, 27 Jul 01

93-on models are electric, AFAIK... - (#690) David Miller, 29 Jul 01
