(Home) Accelerator cable adjustment

A couple of weeks ago, I was looking into the engine bay together with a friend and he pointed out to me that the accelerator cable (the one that runs sideways on top of the engine, just behind the radiator fan) looked rather slack and want tightening up to give my accelerator pedal the full traveling distance to the floor. I did so but had to realise that the matter was not quite that easy
The tension on this cable seems to vary! Once the engine is hot, it appears to be much shorter and (the way I had adjusted it) did not allow the mechanism to move into its zero position. Since then I have been playing with this cable several times and, to my surprise, found that it can have quite an impact on performance
If it is too loose, as my friend said, you are giving away performance when flooring the pedal. If it is too tight, you seem to loose some power as well. In the end, I adjusted the setting in minimal steps (1/6th of a turn) and found a spot which seems to be just right. You can tell that the there is a _significant_ performance increase. The engine will now react to the slightest touch of the pedal. The whole driving experienceseems somewhat "more sporty".
I thought you might find this interesting.

The injection pump has a thermally operated advance and fast idle device. The throttle lever should be 5mm or so off the stop in the cold.
The easy way to adjust the cable is to depress the pedal, and ensure you hear the clunk of the lever against the stop screw. - (#673) David Miller, 27 Jul 01
