(Home) Warning light

i have a warning that has just appeared intermittently, oil can with a wavy line under it. not the oil level/presure one but another. I have 2.0L Royal Lounge. Sorry to be so basic but I haven't got around to buying the handbook yet and so many answers appear to be here!

I own a townace 2.l td I just noticed one of the warning light is on all the time
I do not know why the bus have water and oil level ok .
the warning light is the 4 from the right it is orang and it stay on all the time I think it may be something to do with the oil but what for the oil the ok the warning have what look like a drip under the warning .
any one know what is it for and how to fix it .
pleas let me know .
thank you - (#1077) bigmoe, 13 Sep 01

I'm not absolutely sure of the sequence of the lights but if the symbol is an oilcan with a drip coming out of it - this means your oil pressure is low and should be checked at a garage immediately. If it is an oil can with a wavy line under it, then this means oil level is low and needs topping up.

it is not oil can it have wavy but it is not a can .
it look like a lid or cover on top of bowl that have wavy lines in the midle and under it there is a drip of liquid .
I toped up the oil just to be on the safe side and also add STP to it I do not know what to do next there is no noise from the engine that say that the baring may be on the way out hence I do not think it is the oil pressure .
I thank you for your help .
any one know what the warning light is please let me know ,thank you all - (#1083) bigmoe, 14 Sep 01

I think that is the fuel water filter warning light - you need to turn the little tap at the bottom of the fuel filter to empty it of water.
Jim - (#1084) Jim Snowden, 14 Sep 01

Gotcha! It's the Fuel Water Filter Warning Light.
If this light is the only warning light on, then you need to change your fuel filter as it is full of water.
If this light is on AS WELL as the battery warning light then it is an indication of a charging problem not a fuel filter problem.

Jim thank you ,you are right I found a tap under the fuel filter I turned slow and water come out I let open untel the fuel also come out clear .

I have just purchased my Townace and would like to know, on the row of warning lights on the dash I have one that is constantly lit. It is the one on the far left and shows four wheels connected by what could be a gearbox symbol. The car is not in four wheel drive! Any help would be greatly appreciated as it would appear to be the only problem I have and i would like to get it sorted out.
Thanks

It's certainly the 4x4 indicator. It is switched by a sensor in the transfer box of the 4x4 models. Check for a single wire coming down below the floor at the l/h rear of the tranny. It shouldn't be connected to anything. - (#1324) david Miller, 31 Oct 01

If you really are sure "the car is not in four wheel drive" then you can ignore this...
As well as a 4WD Auto Townace I have a '89 4WD Manual Corolla Estate. The Corolla has permanent 4WD with the option to lock the transfer diff.
On both cars I notice that when you de-select the 4WD option the indicator does not go out immediately especially if it is on tarmac rather than off the road.
To get the transfer box to disengage you sometimes have to be quite rough with the car, jerking forwards and backwards - difficult with Auto. Best to disengage 4WD whilst still on loose ground. - (#1328) Dave Mason, 31 Oct 01

As far as i can tell the car is not in 4WD (he hubs are not locked and the switch is not pressed in for 4WD)I will have a check through the wiring this weekend to see if there is a short somewhere. Other than that it drives perfect.
Thanks for the help

IF the explanation is that the transfer box is stuck in 4WD, then you will have to engage the front hubs for there to be any effect. You will also have to engage the front hubs but leave the 4WD switch "not pressed in" and drive it fairly roughly forwards and backwards to free it. - (#1365) Dave Mason, 5 Nov 01

I have a master-ace 2.0td and on a long run the oil level light comes on . It only stays on for a moment but keeps coming on again . I am constantly checking oil and water levels and all is ok any one out there got any ideas? - (#1815) Ian Glass, 4 Jan 02

When did you last change your oil and filter?
If you have not done it recently it could mean your oil is a bit thin and after a long run cannot maintain pressure.
Check your oil pressure sender unit is operating properly at the right pressure.
Worse case could be your oil pump is worn and in need of overhaul.
I have a 13 year old Peugoet which does the same thing and have now just put it down to the engine being a bit tired having 163K on the clock, I just make sure I keep the revs up a bit when coming off the motorway.

can any body tell me what the warning light means that looks like a box with 2 tubes either end and 4 wavy lines on top. please - (#2055) gordon, 1 Feb 02

Gordon,
I suspect you are refering to the 'Water in the Diesel Filter' light, amber lamp with a reservoir with a liquid in it. If so then you need to drain the water off from the fuel filter. HTH Regards Rob. - (#2058) Rob Drinkwater, 1 Feb 02

thanks for answering rob but i forgot to say my townie is a 2ltr masterace petrol/plus its the fourth warning light on the 4th from left to right any information would be grateful thank you. - (#2060) gordon, 1 Feb 02

Gordon,
certainly on our diesel townie fourth warning light from the left (excluding door open light) after the glow plug light has gone out is the diesel filter warning light, what it is on a petrol I couldn't tell you! Is it immediately to the left of the lamp that looks like a coliseum if so then it is a different warning lamp to us diesel owners & I can't quite work out what it would be. If you can give us a better description, or even better e-mail me a drawing or photo of the lamp then I'll see if I can work out what it is. E-mail to the address highlighted above. HTH. Regards Rob. - (#2066) Rob Drinkwater, 2 Feb 02

can anyone help me solve this problem
i have a warning light on the dash wich looks like a colosseum on the far right of my dash, ive looked at the water in both the rad and header tank and dont seem to be loosing any,ive also spoke to toyota who didnt seem to interested as it was'nt a uk vehicle

- (#4070) chris baldwin, 1 Aug 02

Low coolent level in the expansion tank/header tank.
Is it on all the time or when it feels like it? May be a lose/bad connection, duff sender. If it comes on at similar times/speeds you need to do more investigation.

- (#4071) Clive Mucklow, 1 Aug 02

its on all the time

- (#4072) c baldwin, 1 Aug 02

Low level or loose connection. Have a fiddle with the connections or try adding some coolent to expansion tank with the engine on and see if it goes out.
Otherwise multimeter, WD40, hammer cheque book, or a visit to breakers for replacement sender.
