Don't know about the dissy or the pipes but the orange light that looks like roman pillars is the expansion bottle water level. Top it up quick and investigate for any water leaks

can any one give me step by step instructions on how to time up my spacecruiser 2litre...for a while now i have been geting a rattle from my valves when i put the engine under load..and when starting..so i took out the disy and cleaned it up..its the one with built in coil ect big black cap...forgot to time up first.so i took out what i belive to be no1 plug (at front) and stuck screwdriver in till came up top stuck disy back in and seems to be firing at no1...put it all back together and rattles worse..tried to rotate disy but still thwere and no power..removed oil cover lid rotated engine until no1 rockers both rocking and still firing at no 1...at 8degrees on flywheel rotated engine until no 4 rocking and timing wheel still at 8 degrees?...tried swapping plug leads to 180 degrees out but wont fire...is there supposed to be adjustment on inlet and outlet valves...any help much needed - (#975) granty, 2 Sep 01

8 degrees BTDC is right for the timing but you need to remove the vacuum pipe from the sub diaphragm and block the end of the tube, while checking it. The Dwell should be 52 +/- 6 degrees. Your rattle though may be coming from the timing chain tensioner, max slack=13.5mm @ 10kg (98N) OR from rattling valves. Your engine uses valve lifters - either of Toyota or GM type. Both have a different method of bleeding but you will need a leak down tester to check.

still having probs with timing...got it to where i think no 1 is and timing on crank case on o degrees but starts and when reving up no 3 valves start to rattle...but not on tik otherany idea where rotor...sholud be pointing...and when firing on no 1...where valves should be....2.0 petrol...or the full timing seq would be great... - (#989) granty32, 4 Sep 01

Remove spark plug from No 1 cylinder. Place finger over hole of no1 spark plug and rotate crankshaft clockwise to TDC. If pressure is felt on finger then this is TDC compression for No1 cylinder. If not then repeat the process. Put spark plug back in.
The next bit you really need to see the diagram but I'll try and describe it.
With the distributor out, looking down from the side of the engine (ie you are at 90 degrees to the side of the engine where the spark plugs are and No1 spark plug is at 11 o clock), position the slot on the top end of the drive rotor at about 2 o clock (30 degrees from vertical).
Next take the distributor and align the groove of the housing with the drill mark of the driven gear (not the driven gear straight pin). Insert the distributor, aligning the centre of the flange with that of the bolt hole on the cylinder block. Lightly tighten the hold down bolt.
Then connect timing light and adjust more accurately to 8 degrees BTDC with vacuum pipe off and sealed.

ian cheers for that info..but iam still having trouble..ive tried to follow your inst but could really do with diagramme..this is the way ive done it....tuned eng till inlet valve gone down and came back up..the timing mark was on 8......had a bit of trouble trying to put dissy back in. looking at mark and drill hole it was firing at 1..firing order 1 3 4 2 put back together and after a while fired up....but when u rev up in 2000 revs starts to rattle valves on no 3 cylinder when past this revs engine runs mint...took around block but pulls away slugishkly and rattle on cyl 3.....put foot down but took a long time to get speed up....i still think timing out .....can not move dissy any more because touching engine.head....is there anything else that could nok timing out....does flywheel go on 2 ways.....found v shape notch on flywheel...seems to line uop...the engine is valve and body 3y any chance of image desprate.,..... - (#1000) granty, 4 Sep 01

Is the spark plug firing as well as the others? Could be a worn or sticking valve lifter or it needs bleeding. Nothing broken on No 3? Not sludged up? Engine flush and oil change might help.
Unfortunately I don't have access to a scanner but if you e-mail me a fax number I can fax the diagrams to you.

grant, have you changed the oil recently? the fact that the noise is only coming from no3 makes me wonder about a tappet problem.
Try a change of oil. - (#1002) David Miller, 4 Sep 01

Try a change of oil.
NOT YET dave but i thought that if it was oil would it be rattling all the time - (#1004) granty, 4 Sep 01
