Hello,
Am I misreading the excellent information provided by experts on this forum or, is the thermostat, on the Masterace 4WD 2C-T engine, mounted on the return hose, ie, the bottom hose ? If it is, it looks difficult to get at or, am I overcomplicating the problem and is it mounted, as is usual with other vehicles, on the top hous outlet casting ? Any comment would be welcome, Thanks. - (#805) John Davis, 14 Aug 01
John, it's on the return hose. The housing is behind/below the aircon compressor as I recall, and two 10mm bolts retain it. Most Toyotas use the same stat, BTW. - (#806) David Miller, 14 Aug 01
Thanks again David. I had thought that I might have an "odd" system and that the CD illustration might not apply to my vehicle. Now, on much closer inspection, I can see the thermostat cover. - (#807) John Davis, 14 Aug 01
rebuilding after head skim. All ok but mechanic not sure where thermostat goes.@ top feed to rad? replacement seems too big, & gaskets here are homemade so reluctant to investigate unneccesarily.

Derek. Which vehicle are you referring to? If it's a Townace diesel, with the 2CT engine, the thermostat is on the return line, ie at the bottom of the block in the area under the injection pump.

Hello David
Although I am typing this slowly, its kind of up to you to read it slowly as well.
Lift up the passenger seat, and locate the expansion tank. This is a white plastic rectangular bottle, that's probably a bit dirty. Carefully slide it upwards, taking care not to jar, or pull on the electric connection to it. If that breaks, your low coolant light wont work.
Once the tank is removed, underneath it you will see a big radiator hose. On the right hand end of the hose, it connects to a metal pipe that comes off the engine about halfway down, just behind the cambelt cover. This is the cold feed of the thermostat housing. On the side of the engine, Its secured by two bolts, 10 or 12 mm I think, positioned at 9 O'clock and 3O'clock. Its not easy to see them, particularly the 9 O'clock one, but with patience and feeling with your fingers, its possible to remove it from standing in the passenger door way.
Do you have a new rubber gasket for it? If not best get one. This fits round the outer edge of the flange of the thermostat, and helps it to seal up properly.
Hope that helps
