(Home) Engine repair manual

David Miller kindly replied to another posted query and he advised on the engine repair manual , Part No RM025E, as a helpful publication for the 2C-T engine. I have just obtained my copy from a local Toyota dealership. It only costs about £8.75, is not liable for VAT, and is ESSENTIAL reading for any owner/mechanic. It is VERY comprehensive, much better than a Haynes manual (which we cannot get anyway)and deals with all aspects of the engine, fault diagnosis and rectification ,and has much information, including wiring diagrams, on the alternator, starter, ancilliaries etc. The prospect of my head removal (no, the one on the Masterace) is now much less formidible. - (#811) John Davis, 15 Aug 01

an excellent manual - agreed! I recently did the head and belt at same time and this manual was v helpful particularly as it gives torque settings and spanner sizes in the text - rather than you having to search for them in a massive table at the back! The biggest probs are getting the timing pulleys off without breaking them - and believe me they are brittle! One point though worth a mention - when tightening the cyl head bolts
The Autodata manual (£50) gives an additional torque stage of something like 22ftLb prior to the 33FtLb. It also specifies a half-hour wait between the 33ftLb and each of the 90 degree turns. This I believe is standard Mercedes-Benz practice on all heads - I don't know if your 2C-T manual has been revised with this extra info since my version - I'd like to know . . The original Toyota Gasket I understand is preferable to the fabric type although it must be whistle clean before during and after fitting (!) and the advice to me was that one MUST replace all head bolts rather than only if they break as suggested by the Toyota book. However, I am sure that other owners have a variety of opinions/experiences on these issues . .
Hope helpful

Thank you Mark for these most helpful comments. No, my version of the engine repair manual does not seem to have been updated with extra torque information. I see it is a 1985 publication but, obtained, only a day or two ago, from Toyota. Others have helpfully indicated an "upgraded" head gasket to overcome frequent failures so, I will investigate this also. If I do have to take the head off (not certain yet), I now have lots of information I would otherwise have had to learn the hard and, possibly, expensive way so, thanks to all for the advice & comments. - (#819) John Davis, 16 Aug 01

Just a quick follow-up, I've ordered the manual today, to be told by the Toyota dealer that the publication will soon be out of circulation, but is still available at the minute. You have been warned! Get your orders in, if the dealer is to be believed!

AFAIK, the factory torque spec. still applies to factory gaskets. The pre-tightening stage is of little relevance other than to settle the gasket.
Interesting that the first gasket I fitted (DNA)- a Federal Mogul from the top-end kit, came with specific tightening instructions that were different to the factory... - (#821) David Miller, 17 Aug 01

Hm, the Toyota Dealer here in Bristol (Arriva) said this part number refers to the 2L diesel Corolla engine, which is not turboed. Generally, they cannot get anything in English, just Japanese for our Aces. Sorry...
Would anyone care to get one of these manuals for me? I'll send you the money straight away. - (#869) Holger Laux, 22 Aug 01

Holger,
I think that your local dealer has mis-informed you. This manual, part No RMO25E, which I obtained less than a week ago, here in Loughborough, covers the 1C,2C & 2C-T engines. There is much information on engines, fuel systems, starters etc, and the turbo, removal, test, repair, fitting etc, is dealt with in detail. I am surprised at the amount of information contained in this book and it is a MUST for the Town/Masterace owner. I see that it was first published in 1985 but I have heard that it may not be re-printed when stocks run out. I will order another copy tomorrow and
if you don't get a copy from another source, email me direct and I will send it to you. Don't worry about being comitted to my copy as a spare will always be handy. Cost is about £8.75, no VAT, but a bit extra for postage. - (#875) John Davis, 22 Aug 01

Is there an equivalent manual for the 3C-T engine ? (I have a 2.2 litre diesel Townace) - (#927) Bill Jones, 30 Aug 01

Bill
Not sure. The reason why the 2C-T manual is available and in english is because the same engine was used in the Camry, which was/is available as a standard UK spec vehicle. Therefore these manuals are created, primarily for the Toyota dealerships' maintenance people but also available to Joe Public if they ask. Not knowing if the 3C-T is available in other vehicles, I couldn't really say. Best check with your Toyota spares dept. some are more friendlier than others. If your's aren't helpful then try Monty's Motors, Sheffield on 0114 285 5558 and ask if a manual exists and if so ask for the part number. Then order it locally.

Just checked with Toyota. They say they don't list one for the 3C-T. No doubt because its an import - sorry.

Thanks for checking it out Ian - any manual like the 2C-T one would have been very handy. No matter - I can always hope I'll never need it !

Your Toyota dealer is telling porkies- the 3C-T is used in the Picnic(3cte, electronic injection.) But do not fear, the only difference worth talking about between 2c and 3c is the capacity... The old book would suffice! - (#962) David Miller, 1 Sep 01

Maybe not telling porkies but just too dim or too idle to use a bit of lateral thinking. Thanks for the correction.

my diesel van needs new rings and i need to know the torque settings for the head bolts, big ends and head torque sequence. It is a 2-c diesel, and it has no sump gasket and would like to know what chemical compound is used.help would be much appreciated

Alison. The engine repair manual, part No RMO25E, covers the 2C engine and gives all of this information and a great deal more. It only costs around £9 and can be ordered by your local Toyota dealer. Are you in UK?
I have recently sent all these figures, together with scans from the manual, showing the head tightening sequence etc, etc, to another contrubutor on this forum and, if you can't get hold of the manual, and would also like this information, let me know.
The sump seal compound is Toyota part No 08826-00080 but this is one of the silicone type compounds, much used by engine repair shops and you can get it at most good factors.
