(Home) Warning lights (three) on intermittently in Spacecruiser, charging problem (Sp+)

does any one know what causes OIL-WATER-BAT light to go on at the same time. sometimes does not come on for 10 mins. Toyota space cruiser 2.0 GL.
Seems to running OK ? - (#814) steve selfe, 15 Aug 01

All three is probably an alternator/ no charge problem. The dash does it's "check bulbs on turnon" thing if charging stops. Suspect a loose connection or sticky/worn brushes.

Have a similar problem as you described but I also have the lights-on
warning signal on permanently with the ignition and lights off - the only
remedy is to leave the door open slightly (I suspect there is a short
somewhere but cant find it) It broke down on the way from cornwall last
week, booster charge got me back to dorset but the problem then developed
into three warning lights on also. Another problem that happened was the
the fast idle wouldnt cut out on choke (I have an auto) this is
electrically activated which makes me suspect a short rather than the
alternator. Broke down this morning from dorset to london (the car not me)
with a complete electrical failure. The recovery guy gave another boost
and checked the alternator which he said was delivering a charge, this is a
reason why I suspect a short, the car ran ok for about 15mins then the 3
lights appeared again. Recovery all the way from Ringwood to London. -
Brilliant fuel economy!!
Checked the earth to engine terminals ok but couldnt locate the body to
earth terminal I think its a short under the dash somewhere or possibly the
ignition switch. Hope you get some clues from these symptoms. If you find
out what the problem is could you let me know. Thanks. - (#839) Ed Ben, 20 Aug 01

I have had the exact same problem which has now been cured, it is caused by the regulator in the alternator. The spacecruiser is now back to her reliable old self. - (#841) colin back, 20 Aug 01

hello Steve not sure if the 1st message got through. The three lights are caused by the regulators being u/s in the alternator. It is a relatively inexpensive job. - (#843) colin back, 20 Aug 01

thanks colin
sorry for the delay in reading these helpful replies about the lights. I have been given a price from toyota of 180 quid to replace the alternater. What do you mean by inexpensive, is it a regulator kit ?

Thanks for the info
Did you replace the alternator or can you just replace the regulator alone?
I have cleaned up these terminals on the alternator and worked it for a short while.
This is obviously the problem I'll take it off completely and have a proper look at the connectors - (#862) Ed Ben, 22 Aug 01

Yes you can just by the regulator, however I purchased a reconditioned alternator for £50.
Glad to help. - (#886) colin back, 24 Aug 01

Hello Steve the regulator was £15 Regards Colin - (#1113) colin back, 21 Sep 01

I have had problems with the three lights, battery, oil and water being alight on the dash board. To cut a long story short, the alternator/ regulator wasn't switching off the current and my battery boiled dry. We changed the alternator and the battery and now the main lights, indicators and brake lights dont work. I have an engine repair manual but it doesn't show the electrical wiring diagrams. Has anyone got a copy they can fax me or can anyone give us a detailed guide as to what to do. We have had all the dash out. The fuses are all working. It's a mystery! - (#888) kim.boswell, 25 Aug 01

Check the fuseable links- either beside the battery or under the drivers seat - (#889) David Miller, 25 Aug 01

I had this problem on my 1990 SpaceCruiser. I figured it must be a wiring problem. On the live battery terminal, there are 2 (I think) connections other than the main one. One of these was loose. I reconnected these wires and the problem disappeared.

I have a 1990 model F 2.0L space cruiser with a mind of its own.
On turning the ignition on the three lights..battery/water/oil stay on even with the engine running.I have changed the alternator twice and the regulator has been replaced with a new one on every occassion, but the problem still remains. if i drive the car (after charging the battery) for a mile or two the battery goes flat and there seem to be a massive drain on the electrical system, and when I put a volt meter across the battery terminals, the needle on the meter goes backwards. Is this normal for these cars or have I got a MEGA problem.........any suggestion/advice welome. - (#2328) FRANKIEBWOY, 23 Feb 02

Having done all that, I would go for the battery. Take your van to a garage and ask them to 'drop test' it to see if any of the cells are damaged. This involves putting a load across the terminals and seeing if any of the cells of the battery are faulty, most should do this for free.
When you put the volt meter across the battery, get somebody to rev the engine up and see if the voltage increases ? I think you should be looking at about 14v for a discharged battery. - (#2329) Mark, 23 Feb 02

i have an 83 space cruiser there are three warning lights on the dash illuminated (oil ,water, ign.)
i have changed the altenator and checked the wiring and fuses no luck any ideas? i have contacted the local dealer for a wiring diagram but told they are not available can anyone help please its a uk standard model f 1983 2.0l - (#2626) Dave Allen, 2 Apr 02

It'll be the regulator in the alternator that is faulty.
Ian - (#2632) Ian Dunse, 3 Apr 02

Ian the regulator is on the front bulkhead near the passenger door pillar not in the alternator cant find a diagram or any voltage or current readings to check it & local dealer says it may take a few weeks to obtain a replacement have you any idea how to test to see if its faulty? - (#2640) Dave Allen, 4 Apr 02

Dave
I'm having a problem hitting your mail server. Could you please answer the following and/or give me an alternative e-mail address for receipt of diagrams incase problem persists - thanks.
Some models have an internal (to alternator) IC regulator in addition to or instead of, the regulator on the bulkhead. Could you give me the model of the alternator? Also the model of the vehicle (should be Y followed by another letter). Am I right in assuming that you had this problem before the fitting of the new alternator? and was it new or second hand?
