(Home) Glow plug relay click

can anyone solve the mystery of a mystery relay type clicking that occurs on my townace It seems to come from under the glove box and when it clicks on the engine revs go up and then go down again when it switches (presumably) off. It happens most of the time idle or driving and I don't know what it is
BTW Air con and cooling fans are all off and it still occurs???? - (#857) Chris Rowan, 21 Aug 01

Just a thought:Is the idle up switch off, it is to the right of the steering colum. - (#858) Barry Thorogood, 21 Aug 01

Are you sure that the aircon (front and rear) are both off?
If so, check out the switches... - (#861) David Miller, 22 Aug 01

I don't know if we are talking about the same thing, but when I start my engine from cold, it behaves a bit sluggish for the first mile or so. As soon as the temp gauge indicates that it is warming up, I can hear this very audible click under the dashboard and then the engine is running fine. I always assumed this was some kind of protection circuit to reduce cold engine wear.

Holger, your click is caused by the post-heat of the glow plugs. The relay is actually in the L/H centre pillar. - (#867) David Miller, 22 Aug 01

Not got one of them ? btw engine is petrol - (#872) Chris Rowan, 22 Aug 01
