(Home) Windscreen

My G reg Townie needs a new winscreen.
A crack caused by a stone from a passing lorry is steadily spreading.
Will I have problems getting it replaced or are they readily available? I am covered for windscreen damage.

Steve,
I see that BBC Spares (bbcspares.co.uk/products) lists new windscreens, from £250 - (#930) John Davis, 30 Aug 01

I too have a cracked front windscreen, but as yet I've not been to a windsceen replacement company to find if there is any problem in getting it replaced,
let us know if you have any problems.........

Steve
If you are covered for windscreen damage on your insurance then take it to the recommended fitter under the terms of your policy, and give them the problem. That's what we pay high premiums for! The worse-case scenario would be for the fitter to have to send to Japan, in which case it could take about 10 days. Therefore get it seen to now before the crack gets worse. That means you can still use it if you do have to wait while they get a replacement.

Where is this "BBCspares" located?
Steve..... - (#945) Steve Lewis, 31 Aug 01

The website does not give an address but, the tel number is 01923-839966. You could probably locate them from this or, give them a ring - (#949) John Davis, 31 Aug 01

I have worked it out as "Watford"
I have just this minute phoned my insurance company and am awaiting a call from autoglass to give me a day and time for fitting a new windscreen.
I wonder if they will have it in stock?
If they do not and they quote a ridiculous waiting time, ie
weeks, then I will tell them about bbcspares.

Just got off the phone with autoglass.
They keep normal clear screens for Townies in stock at their head office. Tinted screens can take upto 3 months to obtain direct from Japan.
Luckily for me, mine is clear, so it will be fitted on Monday afternoon, assuming it is the correct screen.
I did mention bbcspares to them and advised that according to their web site, they keep screens in stock.
Autoglass said that they would not deal with them as they had ripped them off previously.
I asked how they had ripped them off, and they said that they had ordered and received a windscreen from them which was damaged, when they tried to return it for either a refund or replacement, they refused to co-operate.

Try the following Web site. I don't know if they have or can help with Townace windscreens as well:

where can i obtain a new or second hand windscreen for my 92 townace super extra and about how much will i have to cough up. - (#1348) Ron, 2 Nov 01

There was some discussion previously on windscreens (See Ace answers No 928) BBC spares might stock a screen but a member did get a screen supplied by Autoglass. Others who have had to replace Townace/Masterace screens might like to comment here. - (#1350) John Davis, 3 Nov 01

To give you some idea of the cost of glass for these vehicles I recently had the tailgate glass replaced. The quote for a new screen was 450 pounds.BBC Spares offered a second hand one for 250 pounds. Not very nice.Good luck. - (#1354) dave price, 4 Nov 01

I live in Ireland and need a windscreen for a 1990 masterace surf. Anyone out there have one? - (#2536) Michael Murphy, 15 Mar 02

I have a 1993 "new shape" Townace Royal Lounge. It went through the MOT last week but I had an advisory saying that there were 2 scratches on the windscreen and 1 large chip, although neither were failure points this time I was advised to get them looked at.

As I have full comp insurance I can get the chip/scratches repaired free, using the insurance with no excess and no effect on my no-claims bonus! However National Windscreens said that the chip was too deep to repair so they want to replace the screen, this has had to be ordered from Japan (by Toyota) and could take upto 8 weeks to arrive. Old shape Townies wouldn't be a problem, screens are available in this country.....So if you use your Townie everyday and get a shattered screen you could be off the road for a while, don't know if Insurance companys offer a hire car for windscreen replacement.

A cheaper and possibly much quicker option would be to get the replacement screen from BBC spares on the Links page of this site. I'm pretty sure they have them sent out within 8 weeks it's just whether your insurance company or their specified fitter (National Windscreens in your case) would buy from them.

I have a new shape townie and had my windscreen damage by a stone while on holiday. My insurance company sent out a windscreen replacement company but they couldn't get a screen with the correct tint so I decided to leave it until I got home.

Back in Bournemouth the local windscreen fitter (I can't remember if they were National or Mobile Windscreens) managed to get the correct screen with the correct tint in 2 days.

Dave, if your interested I will dig out their contact details. The list price from Toyota was £375, luckily the insurance company paid.
- (#5441) Rob Storer, 8 Sep 02

Rob,

Thanks for the reply. National have ordered a screen through Toyota so I will wait and see what happens, it's only been 3 weeks so far! If I haven't heard soon I'll post again for the contact details you have!

I have just had my windscreen shattered. I got onto RAC Auto Windscreens and the guy said that it was the same glass as the equivalent year lite-ace van. My Townie is a 1987 4x4 surf extra. Anyone know if he is right? I hope he is because he is ordering one up from Glasgow, and will have a 150 mile round trip to fit it tomorrow!

- (#7916) Tom Lister, 1 Apr 03 8:13

I'm not sure if the windscreen are the same size / shape but I would check the tint. The van screen may be untinted. I had a screen go on my 91 liteace and the company that came out managed to get the correct screen with the right tint in 2 days.

- (#7917) Rob Storer, 1 Apr 03 10:42

Just to (belatedly) update this thread, the lite-ace van screen was the wrong one. What was needed and eventually fitted was a UK spacecruiser one.

Thanks for the advice Rob, it was indeed untinted but as it didn't fit anyway it wasn't a problem. The Spacecruiser one was tinted.

Thanks

Tom
