(Home) Vacuum pump

Could anyone kindly explain the function of the vacuum pump, mounted in line with the alternator, on the 2C-T engine ? Does this pump provide a vacuum supply for general engine controls or, is it for just one special application ? Any advice much appreciated. - (#929) Johnn Davis, 30 Aug 01

I think that this vacum pump is for the braking system o.k. mate............ - (#931) chris, 30 Aug 01

yes, John, the servo on a diesel needs a source of vacuum, as there is no depression in the inlet manifold. No throttle valve= no vacuum. It also supplies the idle up and 4x4 systems. - (#935) David Miller, 31 Aug 01

Thanks David & Chris. I should have known this but, especially with this excellent forum, you learn something every day. - (#936) John Davis, 31 Aug 01

You must have full pressure oil feed to the vacuum pump to make it work properly, I've just had a blocked oil feed to the pump which caused the brake servo to run out of vacuum after 2 pedal operatoins at slow speed, brake comes on on dashboard. don't be fooled by the fact that oil coes out of the pipe when you undo it, it must spurt out at high pressure
