(Home) Transmission

I have a Townace which failed its MOT on emmisions. I had new injectors fitted
and the fuel pump recalibrated, after which it passed the MOT. Trouble is its
totally gutless now and changing gear at too high a rev rate. It takes for ever to pull
away and dies terribly on hills. Bad news for me since I was hoping to tow with it.
I've read previous postings on this site and I'm about to have a go at adjusting the
gearbox control cable. I have noticed that although the little level stick in the
transmission fluid reservoir is saying full, the long dipstick which runs down into
the transmission box is telling me its on minimum level for cold even when the
engine is hot. Is there likely to be a blockage somewhere or am I missing
something? Appreciate anybody's advice on this.
Cheers

the little dipstick is only for the power steering. Top up your transmission ASAP!! Check with the engine hot and running in "N"
With the fluid level OK, then re- check the kickdown cable adjustment.
It's possible, BTW, that whoever adjusted your injection pump turned it down too far...

Thanks for that, I forgot about the power steering
Is there an adjustment accessible to increase the fuel feed. The "diesel experts"
I took the car to told me that they adjusted the pump off of the car on some
test rig.

Yes there is, but it's quite a fine adjustment. Take the car for a run and look in the reversing mirror for black smoke. Is there any
1. if you floor it from a standstill
2. Accelerating hard at high revs
3. If you floor it, sitting at around 40mph or so.
Let me know where you see smoke, and I'll tell you what adjustments to make. - (#946) David Miller, 31 Aug 01

Thanks I'll do that, but in the mean time I have also noticed that neither of the 2
LEDs labelled "TURBO" on the tacho come on at all. Does this mean that the turbo
is not working ? What do they indicate? I have the horrible feeling that this is going
to be expensive again.
By the way I couldn't find the filler cap for the transmission fluid so I topped it up via
the dipstick tube. (Fiddly and slow) I'm sure its just me being blind but where is it?
Topping up made no difference by the way so I'm about to have a play with the kick
down cable. I've never had a diesel or an automatic before so this is all new ground to me.
best regards

The green turbo light means it's working, the amber means it's working too well (too much boost)
You're right about topping up the tranny.
Make sure that the throttle is opening fully- get someone to press the pedal & make sure that the pump lever is against it's stop.
Then set the kickdown cable so that there's about 1/8" freeplay in it. Try that. - (#964) David Miller, 1 Sep 01

The throttle is definately opening fully, no smoke if I floor it at 40mph and I can't
see any if I floor it from standstill. If I floor it at high revs with engine under load
it is so slow to respond that theres no smoke there either. The only time I get any
smoke at all is if I floor it with no load on the engine ( in neutral ).
Neither turbo light comes on at all. Idle up switch does nothing either although I
can see for myself how to adjust this ( the push screw doesn't reach the throttle lever)
Adjusting the kick down cable has improved gear changing greatly.
It seems my problem now is just engine power.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
