(Home) Head renovation, skimming

I wonder if anyone can advise or assist here ? With the head off my 2C-T engine, I notice that there are cracks in each of the pre combustion chambers. I am currently having the head pressure tested but, as I have not let it run for very long with the cooling problem, initial tests indicate that the head is OK as far as warping etc. I am having it lightly skimmed though. Has anyone a source for these pre combustion chambers before I pluck up courage to ask the Toytota dealer about availability and (especially)price. Part number is 11161-64050 or 11106-64050. Any advice would be more than welcome. - (#943) John Davis, 31 Aug 01

John, try your local engine reconditioners for pattern parts. If you're stuck, I've got a set in my cracked head. I'm sure they'll come out. - (#947) David Miller, 31 Aug 01

David,
Your helpful comments are, as usual, very much appreciated. A direct email on it's way re your very kind offer. - (#948) John Davis, 31 Aug 01

The Company who are attending to my cylinder head (2C-T engine) have queried ANY skimming in case it brings and opening valve too near to the piston crown ???
I cannot find any dimensions to check this but, surely, even on a 20-1 deisel, say, a 5 thou skim should not cause problems. Has anyone else had this query raised ? Any comment much appreciated. Thanks - (#978) jJohn Davis, 3 Sep 01

No idea, John, but if it should be an issue, get them to machine back the valve seats the same amount and reshim to suit.
Could you get the head back and"clay" the top of a piston to check for clearance? - (#985) David Miller, 3 Sep 01

Thanks David, Yes, I will do a test prior to the skim, ie, with "Plastiguage" (If I can find some after all these years) - (#986) John Davis, 3 Sep 01

David. Thanks for the advice re possible boring of the valve seats and re-shimming but, could you, or anyone advise on if the valve shims are readily available ? I assume it would be from the Toyota dealer. I have not checked yet but am laying my plans for this eventuality.

John
Have you checked with Bullivant?

Thanks Ian (and all who have answered my queries) I have been to Bullivants of Chaddesden, Derby, who have been most helpful. They import, sell, maintain our favourite vehicle and are willing to give advice. They also supply spares. Re the head skim, for what it's worth, there is a milled recesss between each cylinder. This is the skimming limit on these engines (C2-T). If that's not there, the valves will contact the pistons.
However, if anyone does care to comment again, surely, I cannot be the only one to find cracks in each combustion chamber. Has anyone else had this drawn to their attention when having a head skim and, what did the head renovators advise ?
New inserts, from Toyota, cost about £350 for a set of four. - (#1013) John Davis, 5 Sep 01

Hi

My 1983 SpaceCruiser packed in on the A3 last week, overheating at the slightest provocation. The roadside assistance people, noting the engine was still overheating after 2 hours of being off, said it's probably the head gasket. I have no idea whether this is the case - anyone got any suggestions?

I've just been quoted £1100 for the fix of this problem from a Toyota dealer. That's three times what I paid for the SpaceCruiser. Need help.

Someone else has quoted me £300-£400. Still as much as I paid for the damn thing. Any advance?

If that's £3-400 for parts and labour I think it's a reasonable deal providing they will check the head is true.
