(Home) Oil consumption

I have owned a 92 2.0TD liteace for the last 4 months. I'm very impressed with it but am slightly conscerned by the oil consumption. It seems to use about 0.5 litre of oil every 750 miles. In all other respects the vehicle is perfect with reasonable peformance and no smoke. Is this level of oil consumption normal?
thanks

Rob
It does seem excessive but would expect to see some form of adverse effect like blue smoke, abnormal noise or even unsightly patches on the driveway! As you don't appear to be experiencing anything of the like, I'd just keep a watchful eye on it.

You've beaten me too it, I was going ask a similar question. I can get more like 1000 miles per 0.5 litre, and although it does smoke on hard acceleration (especially on kick-down), I'm happy with performance, economy (29-31 mpg) and there's no oil patches.

Obvious things to look for are
leaks, incorrect grade or poor quality oil, dirty air cleaner. After that you could look for crankcase ventilation system obstruction, blockage in induction system, broken or worn
piston rings, pistons, valve stems, valve stem oil seals.
Although I can't admit to regularly topping mine up with oil, I do believe that diesels are expected to use up oil more than petrol engines. - (#1053) Ian Dunse, 11 Sep 01
