(Home) Heater faulty

Could anyone offer advice please on the procedure for accessing the front heater unit on the Townace/Masterace ? I think I have airlock problems in this heater, ie, blowing only slightly warm when vehicle is at operating temperature. Is the water valve directly operated by the cold/hot control on the dashboard or, is it switched through a solenoid. If it is, is this control mounted low down on the left of the passenger footwell, behind the removable panel ? Also, to access the heater, does the dashboard have to be taken off together with the cool/hot box ?
Any advice much appreciated. - (#1068) John Davis, 12 Sep 01

yes, john, the dash has to come out. There is a water valve below the floor- above the horizontal rad. I've never seen any airlock problems, probably a piece of scale blocking the valve. Try reverse flushing the matrix. - (#1072) David Miller, 13 Sep 01

Thanks again David. It looks like a bit more practice at being a contortionist. I've only just recovered from the head gasket/skim operation. - (#1075) John Davis, 13 Sep 01

hi
can anyone help, my heater suddenly stopped blowing out air, now in auto it blows out hot air but only as if the heater was in lo or even half. the rear one is unaffected. around the same time the radio when on mw emits a loud static burp for about half a second every now and again. are these related and are they easy and cheap to fix like every thing else. - (#2271) jim, 19 Feb 02

you've auto aircon/ climate control? Sounds like the servo motor in the heater is dying.check for slack connections, loose relays, etc, before thinking about a replacement servo - (#2273) david miller, 19 Feb 02

Being a new towni owner can anyone suggest what might have gone wrong .

Heater seems to have stopped blowing out Hot air is there a difference between the resistance of the heater controls as the hot/ cold lever seems to now have less resistance in moving than the other two levers .
Is it cable operated onto electric valves it is a 1992 model vehicle .

All the other functions seem to be Ok heat will not go to the rear AC unit either .

Please advise thanks .

is it blowing cold air...if so could be a blockage in the water system....

Have you got "normal" heating controls or, have you got air con with climate control ? Is the hot/cold sliding lever, on the dash, marked in degrees and is there an "auto" position for the fan blower. As I discovered recently, and you will find these references in the archives, the heater controls (for climate control) operate through relays rather than direct cable connections so your investigations should be influenced by the system fitted in your vehicle. Does the temperature gauge show normal ? If there is, also, no heat to the rear exchanger, I would start with an examination of the cooling system pipework and check, under the vehicle, if the supply & return pipe,
to the rear heater, are getting hot.

To John Davis - Thanks there is an auto position on the system will check out the Pipes it is blowing cold air in to the vehicle . the picture in the Archives is
like my unit . The temp gauge does show normal .
