(Home) Acceleration poor at first/cold, glow plug cycle

Anybody got any idea why my 2.0TD is bog slow when cold? To the extent that it will sometimes almost refuse to climb a gentle hill until it's warmed up? It's been serviced regularly (albeit not by same mechanic - not too many people seem capable of sorting every single problem out).
Engine history is the usual - rad leak, overheated, head gasket blew, head warped, skimmed, new gasket, new rad core, now very tight coolant-wise but lacking any grunt below 2000 rpm. Makes it very difficult to pull my trailer tent anywhere interesting! - (#1080) SteveFE, 13 Sep 01

Steve
Mine's a bit lazy when cold but soon warms up and is ok then. Have you tried knocking back the allen screw on top of the pump an 1/8" as David Miller suggested, to get a bit more go from a start?

My LiteAce is rather slow for the first mile or so. Then I can hear a very noticable click from behind the dashboard, about where the rev counter is. Afterwards, it is OK. - (#1086) Holger Laux, 14 Sep 01

Hi, just back from my hols...
Thw sluggishness when cold is caused by the post-heat cycle of the glowplugs. The relay for it is behind the pass. seatbelt reel on the townie. Yoy can just disconnect the black spade terminal at the glowplugs and the sluggishness is gone. A little rough running on a really cold (0C)is the price you pay for safety at the first junction of the day.
