(Home) Brake lights...not

I have no brake lights, I have changed the bulbs, the fuse and the switch but still no Joy. Am I overlooking something obvious?

Could be a bad earth. Run a piece of wire from one of the bulbs' casing to a good earthing point. If in doubt scratch away paint/insulation from a piece of mtal on the chassis. If you get a result, then either trace the fault or run new wires to earth. If no joy then get a circuit tester and check thru the system. The live feed to the bulb holder would be a good place to start.

Would the Switch be earthed through the switch holder? There are two wires coming from the switch. Is it usual for the brakelights to work even when there is no ignition key inserted? My Spacer used to do just that? - (#1147) Paul Gilmour, 28 Sep 01

Usually yes. The switch is there to break the live wire. So effectively, one wire comes from live ie. ultimately the battery, the other delivers it to the application (bulb). Yes the brakelights should work without the ignition for safety reasons, therefore the live feed comes direct from the battery (via the fusebox of course) and not via the ignition switch. - (#1148) Ian Dunse, 28 Sep 01
