(Home) Brakes / front suspension

My '92 Liteace graunches every time I stop. It sound as though the pads are down to the metal and are rubbing the disks but I 've inspected them and they're fine. Could this be a suspension noise?

Not sure of your descriptive terminology Rob - "graunches". Is the noise directly related to braking? If so are you getting brake grab, judder or squeal? Are the pads wearing down uniformly? If not then the disc(s) could be out of alignment and could give a noise. Does the bus pull to one side when braking? Finally, if more of a squeal then try a bit of coppaslip on the back of each pad (not too much, you don't want it getting onto the disc or pad surface).

Ian, thanks for your reply. The sound is exactly the same as worn pads i.e. metal against metal and is intermittent. I will remove the pads again and re-inspect although they looked fine on first inspection. - (#1179) Rob Storer, 5 Oct 01

Rob
Don't know what brand of pads you have but I've had pads that appear to contain flecks of metal and are really hard and caused the metal on metal noise as you describe. Try taking the surface off with a rough cut file and see if it goes away. If it does then it will come back as the pad surface gets polished again. Only solution then is new pads.

Thanks for the advice, I've looked at the pads again and the are slightly glazed. I've broken the surface and reinstalled them. So far it seems to have cured the problem. - (#1197) Rob Storer, 7 Oct 01
