(Home) Rev counter

I have a 1990 townace super extra. I have a problem with my rev counter. When I start the van the rev counter works, I travel a few yards down the road and the needle will return to zero and stay there no matter how bumpy the road. If I switch off and start again the counter will start working but stop when a few yards down yhe road. I've had the display out and the connections seem clean and intact.I'm wondering if it could be the sensor, but I don't know where it is. If it is a loose connection, surely the counter would flicker on and off if on a bumpy road. Can someone please help because it is really annoying me... I live in the Worthing W.Sussex area, does anyone fancy meeting up and comparing Ace's - (#1303) Hing, 28 Oct 01

the sensor is fitted to the injection pump, it's inbetween the pump and the block. There is a connector in the wire to it, at the rear end of the pump. - (#1305) David Miller, 28 Oct 01

Hi Guys, pitty, we don't have Townies here in South Africa and I thus had to go with a 2CT conversion on a VW Microbus. It still has the original alternator, but a voltage regulater conversion had to be done on it. Apparently one would normally get a rev counter output on the 'W' terminal on alternators from diesel motors, but the 2CT seems to lack this. Any ideas?

the 2c has a pickup sensor at the side of the injection pump, under the inlet manifold. (if one is fitted to your pump, but that's where it fits...)

Thanks Dave, I saw the 2 wires from the sensor on the lefthand side just under the cut-out switch. I tried to test for resistance change, putting voltage through etc. Seems to have quite a high resistance. Should one wire go to pos/neg and the other to the counter? If this is the case it's probably faulty...

I got the torque settings which Ian Dunse published on this site (13ft-lb and 33 for head). Isn't there degrees as well - stretch bolts? 33 also seems very little as other Toyota 2.2 and 2.4 diesels heads here have to be torqued to 110-120Nm - that's 80ft-lb!)

Thanks Guys for a great website! There's not much on 2CT's on the web. Anyone got a link to a full spec sheet, as I still need torque for big-ends? I will try to get the RM025E manual from Amazon, as I can't get it from Toyota here.

Big end torque is 47ft/lb. head is 33 yes, then 90 deg and 90deg again.
The pickup for the tacho should be 600-800 ohms, and is connected between tacho and ground, yes. It's an inductive sensor working off a gear wheel in the pump, so you're looking at a low AC output.

Great Dave, thanks to your quick response, the motor can be reassembled tonight! I really appriciate it.

could anyone please help, ive got a 1990 townace td auto 4wd. a problem with the rev counter has appeared. when i start up it works ok, about 1/2 mile later it stops. turn engine off and on again and it works for about 1/2 mile again then it stops. anyone had this fault b4 ?

- (#6076) DARREN, 9 Nov 02

Probably the revcounter itself duff. Perhaps a dry solder joint or crack in a component.
All the other gauges and lights OK?

- (#6077) david miller, 9 Nov 02

checked all other electrical items all ok just tacho fault started last week.

- (#6078) DARREN, 10 Nov 02

Well, sounds like the tacho module itself. It's pickup(on the injection pump) is unlikely to fail.
First off, check all the terminal screws holding the unit into the instrument cluster are tight.

thanks for your help. job for next weekend though. will let you know outcome.
another question that may need your opinion
does 70km per £10.00 of diesel sound right ? i am used to a peugeot 306 td which did 120 miles ! to £10.00. i know this is a much bigger and heavier bus but 70kms ???

- (#6080) DARREN, 10 Nov 02

Sounds a little thirsty, we get around 28 Mpg generally, which equates to around 82 MILES for £10 of diesel, 82 MILES = 131 KILOMETRES so it sounds like your down to around 14-15 Mpg, sounds like your over fuelling big time, could this be a pump problem? HTH Rob.

Hi I have owned a townace for 4 years it is a 1990 2LTD . the problem that i have is when i start the car the rev counter will work for abaut 10-15 seconds then it will drop to zero . It will also drop to zero if you rev the vehicle up to 3000 revs,
anybody got any surgestions please!!! Its doing my head in .

tacho sender is at the back of in injection pump (between it and the block), but the signal goes through the "emissions computer" which is actually the glowplug and EGR controller.
I'll guess it's a bad connection- specifically a bad earth- around the glowplug circuit although it could be ANYTHING between sensor and needle...

Steve if you sort this problem let me know as i have exactly the same problem. cheers Russell
