(Home) Manifolds, repairing cracked exhaust ones

I have seen comments on this forum re cracked exhaust manifolds, possibly following an overheated head etc as a consequence of our well known cooling problems. Also, figures of £100 plus for a new Townace manifold have been indicated. It's worth remembering that cast iron manifolds can be "brazed" to repair the crack. The crack has to be arrested by drilling and, with some pre heating, brazing makes a very sound and permanent repair, if followed by accurate filing for level. My view is that many manifolds crack when they are replaced after an overhaul because they have not been tested, and then filed, for flatness. I have recovered iron heads and manifolds in this way and, most small engineering workshops would be able to carry out these repairs at not too high a cost - (#1340) Johnn Davis, 2 Nov 01
