Door open warning light

John, there's a relay box thatdoes some magic. On my townie, there's an extra cable fitted, connecting the lamp up to the door switches- it looks suspiciously like it was done by the importer. Does the light turn off if you turn the Room switch off? is the green light on beside the ign.sw? I got around the light being on along with the room switch with an additional diode.
Does the rear door operate it? It doesn't on mine, even though there is an unlock warning switch on the tailgate lock. You might just have to delve into the control box under the dash... - (#1416) David Miller, 13 Nov 01

Thanks David for those helpful tips. As per an earlier thread, I have not yet resolved the intermittent "room" light problem but, with your advice I will get to grips with both problems asap.
BTW The green delay light, by the ignition, works as it should, ie, stays on for the required few seconds. - (#1417) John Davis, 13 Nov 01

The warning light(red with doors open) indicates that the doors are unlocked with the engine on.
Shut all doors and then lock them from the drivers doors and the light goes out.
Can of course open any door buy opening as normal
the light stays OFF. - (#1418) Barry Thorogood, 13 Nov 01

Yes, I think Barry's made the important point. Toyota want that door warning light on unless all the doors are locked, not just shut, thus preventing access from outside. Strange as it is (say in an emergency) the general view is that this is a requirement in Japan - perhaps just for cars mainly used as taxis.
Like many owners, I guess, with passengers I've got used to flipping the driver's armrest "doors lock" switch to check the doors are shut, then back again because it feels safer not to be locked in - and then drive with the "door open" light on - to some passengers' alarm.
The circuitry must be involved. I wonder if there's a diagram in that Russian manual, or any other. I'd be glad to decipher it if I could see it, and try to provide a description of a simple mod to get round this annoying false alarm. - (#1419) Dave Mason, 14 Nov 01

Thanks Barry for the answer to this puzzle, Following your advice, everything now working fine - (#1420) John Davis, 14 Nov 01

Aha, now we're getting somewhere. The link between lock and lamp has been broken on mine by the importer. I don't know if the door control relay has been bypassed, but mine doesn't have one- the lock motors run for as long as you hold the button down... There is a wire under the dash connecting the unlock lamp to the interior light circuit. And no, the circuit isn't in either the russian or UK wiring diagrams - (#1426) David Miller, 15 Nov 01
