(Home) Towing with a Townie

I am in the process of buying a Townace 2.0TD and would like to know if anyone has experience of towing a caravan with one, ie, is it up to the job, fuel consumption - etc. Or, is it worth holding out for a 2.2TD for the extra power? Thanks in advance. - (#1489) Lynne Smithers, 24 Nov 01

but a twin axle trailer (3.8 m long) and have no problems. (carrying rock band type gear)
fuel consumption normally 35mpg (ish)
with trailer = 20mpg
this is with a 2.0TD, manual transmition (1990 190k kms) - (#1492) skippy, 24 Nov 01

Lynne,
I have a 2L.TD Masterace with a Manual Gearbox it is non 4WD. I tow a 17Ft Trailer complete with Boat/Engines etc no problem at all as long as you drive sensibly. MPG towing is approx 25MPG. I can cruise along the motorway quite happily at 60 MPH. Be aware that Manual Townies appear to be a lot lower geared tham autos and can cope with towing. People I have met with an auto box would not recommend them for towing anything larger that a trailer tent. One downside to the manual gearbox is that Gear selection is not very smooth due to the nature of its operation (cables). Hope this helps. - (#1524) Steve Vale, 29 Nov 01
