(Home) Radiator cap

Is there a part number for the above that will enable me to buy one from a car spares shop, without using "TOYOTA"?? - (#1504) Brian Mitchell, 26 Nov 01

I think its a standard "Jap small" variant. Pretty bog standard on many Japanese vehicles. Best bet is to take your old one along and compare. You can even get one in Halfords so must be common!

A tip I found helpful
smear vaseline on the top of the filler neck before fitting the radiator cap.

I check the coolant level in there regularly (first thing in the morning, expect it to be brim full) but the cap is stiff to turn and, not surprisingly, frequent removal means that the upper, larger, seal in the cap soon splits from rubbing over the top of the neck. And when that splits the coolant can't be sucked back in properly - as I notice had happened recently. What to do?
1. Check the filler neck level less often? Risky.
2. Check the level in the expansion tank instead ("normal"=no loss?) - can't really see the level, can anyone? Use a dipstick?
3. File the bumps on the filler neck so that the cap is still retained but not so stiff to push past them? - I'm still thinking of doing this and when chatting to a mechanic about it he suggested the tip above as something he does on all cars. (I still use the cheap and easy-to-get caps from Halfords by the way, perhaps they'll now last longer than 6 months.)

The official Denso cap fits like a glove, is as smooth as silk, and the seals don't harden in the heat. Pity it's £16...

My Toyota dealer says £10.04 + VAT for the 16401 64501 with plastic float.

- (#5213) Dave Mason, 22 Aug 02

I hate you...
Actually, I hate the local dealer. Friendly, helpful, courteous. But doesn't understand the meaning of the word "discount"...
I believe Ian Dunse paid about that, BTW

Yes, it's interesting to compare Toyota dealers - one of the benefits of this site. Where I think I draw the short straw, here on the west sussex coast, is the scarcity of accessible car breakers. I wish I could help you guys in N. Ireland find a cheaper insurer.

For the record, and not to rub it in, £10.04 + VAT for the Toyota/Denso 16401 64501 rad cap with plastic float is the regular price locally, as far as I know. I'm not in the motor trade and don't get any discount.

Regarding Blueprint's ADC49902 rad cap, can anyone provide a price and say whether it has a similar plastic float (see Ian Dunse's picture in the Cooling folder on this Ace Answers website ) and whether it also fits "as smooth as silk"?

I have a 91 liteace 2ct engine imported from japan i have a problem with the coolant it cant be sucked back to the radiator when the engine cools down. It does not overheat but i have to refill the radiator every morning with the coolant from the expansion tank. I tried replacing the cap several times with different brands but still the problem is still there. It does not sucked back the coolant, what will i do? What parts do i need to replace? it does'nt have any leak. thanks.

Gilbert,
If you have a new rad cap fitted, the valve, in this cap, which allows coolant to be pushed out of the main system and into the expansion tank, should be in good condition but, it seems to me, that air is being sucked into the system. Is the top of the filler neck, ie, where the cap twists onto, in good condition ? Are there any cuts or nicks which do not get sealed by the cap washer? Also, is the small hose, from the side of the filler neck to the expansion tank, in good condition. If there is any doubt, replace this hose, together with the small suction hose which is fitted under the expansion tank filler cap.
By removing the small hose from the side of the rad/filler neck, together with the expansion tank filler cap and hose, you can test it's condition by blowing (or sucking) through this assembly to see if any air is escaping or being drawn in. This whole assembly must be airtight. The cap, on the expansion tank, does not need to be airtight but the all the hose connections do need to be.
Look in the Ace Answers lists and you will see helpful information on this arrangement.

Get some tube in the expansion tank now! - can use firm petrol hose etc. - make sure its a tight fit and reaches the bottom/ish - use a small cable tie if worried over it coming adrift - you can get a rad cap (0.9 rated) at any parts shop but toyota ones (with float)are better - from the totota dealer

hi there . about the radcap with the engine cold should you be ayble to push water through the rad cap in to the exspantion bottle by squising the thick black hose on the rad cap housing if so does the rad cap need changing or is this normal thanks pete.

- (#11370) pete, 25 Oct 03 7:08

I don't think thats normal - I would stick some very fine emery to an appropriate size socket and ensure the seal is good in the pressure cap housing - just twist it lightly to get a continous fresh line (careful though as you don't want grit in the coolant) - also examine the valve on the rad cap and if necessary renew this

thanks chris cleaned it thats don the job holding presure now and thank again.pete
