(Home) Central locking

I have had my townie 2.0lt td auto royal lounge 10 days.
It had a problem with the c/l when i bought it by the dealer changed the control box over from under the dash.
This one now has an intermitant fault. Some times will not work at all. Touch it and it works.
Inside the box is a pcb with 3 relays on.
Do these stick and if so can they be cleaned or replaced. If not where can i get a replacement unit.
Could someone tell me if it is right for the c/l to lock all doors on drivers door but when i unlock only the drivers door unlocks and i have to press the button on the arm to unlock the rest.
Any help please Phil Cook - (#1550) Phil Cook, 3 Dec 01

The unlocking of all the doors from the drivers door is correct.
Upon coming to the vehicle which is all locked up.opening the drivers door is then the only one unlocked.the C/L then opens all other doors.
Once inside one can lock all others doors by the drivers door lock switch and the dash warning light goes out.
This is for safety reasons I belive. - (#1552) Barry Thorogood, 3 Dec 01

If it works when you move it, it's more than likely a dry joint on the PCB. If you can't resolder it, try your local TV repairman... - (#1631) David Miller, 15 Dec 01

i have just bought a townace royal lounge 4wd 1991 and i think i may have a problem with the central locking.when i put the key in the drivers door it only opens the drivers door and so i have to open the other doors with the button inside the vehicle also the red light on the dashboard stays on until i lock all of the doors with the button inside.i can't open the front passenger door at all with the key.can anybody help?
i am also looking for a cheap english workshop manual if anybody knows where i can purchase one please let me know. - (#2555) Dave Armstrong, 25 Mar 02

Hello Dave,
To take you problems in order. The central locking doesn't work from the door locks, it is only operated from the button on the inside of the drivers door. The red light on your dashboard is supposed be on until you lock all the doors, it is there as a safety thing to let you know not all the doors are locked. As for the passenger door I would think that a linkage has probably fallen off which would require you to delve behind the inner door trim.
The workshop manual idea has been going on for the 2 years plus of this site. An english workshop manual for this vehicle as a whole doesn't exist as they were only intended for the Japanese market. I'm sure one of the others will put you onto a workshop manual for the engine, David or Ian may oblige.
If you follow the link on the homepage you can find further information about the manual I have that is in Russian and my attempts to get it translated.
Welcome to the site.

That's right. The Toyota manual for the 2C engine is RM025E (IIRC). Go to your Toyota dealer and ask them to order it for you. Its about £8.75.

Reference your lock problem -- Thats odd! I have a 92 Liteace and when I unlock the drivers door it releases all the door locks ( I do have the door panel central locking switch ). Is this unique to the year and model of Townie? In saying that, I have no dashboard light indicating the lock status? Comments from others more conversant with the electronics of these vehicles would be helpful. - (#2562) stephen judge, 26 Mar 02

I think it changed with the facelift... - (#2565) david miller, 27 Mar 02

It is my understanding that the central locking on mt 1990 Townace operates as follows; open drivers door with key, only drivers door opens, the rest of the doors open with the door switch. The drivers door should lock all doors when locking it with the key. Is this true? Mine does all but the last step.
I have bought a remote central locking system that will not open or lock the door but functions ok. I have connected it to the Blue / Black and Blue / Red wires on the door switch (these went live when the switch was operated) The supplier will not offer me any help as it is a non standard vehicle! They were happy enough to advise me that "All Toyotas" use a negative pilse system. Is this true?
I will persavere until i get som ejoy.

http://www.mpvi.net/ie/pic.htm?pic=../im/rm289e92/ewd/18ciglok.gif is a guide to the wiring (actually for non-existent 1992 on LHD version, with badly translated labels e.g. slide/side door.)

I would not describe this as "negative pulse" but I'm not familiar with how that term is used in the trade.

Yes, open drivers door with key, only drivers door opens, the rest of the doors open with the driver's armrest switch. Lock all doors at the driver's door with the armrest switch OR with the key OR with the button by the window - though how the key does it is not covered in that schematic.

Thanks for the diagram, I dont see how the door lock or pushing down the door knob operates the other doors as there are only 2 wires at the drivers door motor. These are the same as the 2 wires on the door switch that can only be made live by operating the door switch. Are there any differneces between models?
I did get the remote unit to work for a couple of locks / unlocks then it stopped for some reason. All fuses ok. There is an output from the unit but only a short 12v pulse as before. If I disconnect the remote control system the door switch still operates the door locks. Any further help appreciated.

"Differences between models" frequently trip us up in discussions. I now think the schematic that I offered is actually for a very simple model which only has electric locking on the back door and one or two sliding doors (it refers to 4-door or 5-door models) and not on the front doors at all.
Do read the archives, under Bodywork. There are references there to relays in control boxes under the dash for the locking. The driver's door lock and door knob definitely lock all doors with a short pulse to the motors, so there must be (a) a switch operated by the key and (b) a more complex circuit than the schematic I had available.

Back again. Another schematic with 4 door lock motors and a relay control box (R), but wire colors in Japanese and most labels in Russian. You can see the single pole, single throw switch (H) connected to KSW presumably for central locking. This is for up to Aug 93, after that there is a schematic with an electronic control box. See http://www.mpvi.net/ie/pic.htm?pic=..
/im/ad2002/398locks.gif it's 200kB, I haven't compressed it yet, so may take a minute to download.

I open my drivers door with key, but in order to centrally unlock the rest of the doors using the armrest switch, I must put the key in the ignition. is this correct? (1992 new shape 2WD 5sp Super Extra)

Hi with reference to your Townace. Mine is a 1991 Master Surf Ace, the originonal setup was drivers door opens with key, use armrest switch to open rest of car with or without ingnition. I have fitted a sparkrite SR85U alarm from Halfords with ultrsonic detectors and remote door locking unit SR911 all now opens and closes from the remote. When trying to wire up,I had the same sort of problems, Sparkrite did not know the wiring code (they do now I told them), so it was suck it and see. When trying to wire into the drivers door it did not work properly so I went to the door relay, under the dash r/hand side (you can hear it click as you operate the armrest switch) and connected the alarm into the blue/white and blue/green wires on the relay, IT WORKED. The only problem I found was I had used Lucar connectors these worked loose so I soldered the joints and since then no bother. I hasten to add this wiring was with the Sparkrite alarm I cannot vouch for any others hope this helps

Thanks all, I got it working in the end. I cut the two 12v feeds from the door switch and fed them through the new central locking module. It does mean the door open light is on all the time as the door button is obsolete. It's easy to turn off with the key fob so no harm done. I could not trace the relay setup from listning only and as I broke my hip in January and at 6' 3" with freezing Scottish weather I am not about to try and freeze and squeeze in that wee space just yet to find it!

Thanks for all your help.

Hi, I was wondering if you guys can help me...

I have a Ford Fairmont 1987 model and it is fitted with a car alarm and central locking on all four doors.

My locks keep on locking and unlocking by themselves and the locks are associated with the car alarm, the alarm now doesn't work and the doors have a mind of their own, so, i was wondering how i can fix this from reoccurring because it is draining my car battery

Thankyou

- (#6928) Luke, 23 Dec 03 17:10

If the alarm does not work disconnect/replace it.

- (#6928) Clive, 24 Dec 03 04:02

- (#6928) alan, 28 Dec 03 14:56

Perhaps trying their website would be a ggod start.

Rob.

They are now called EDA Sparkrite.

cheers wayne.........

It's unlikely that you will get an answer here I'm afraid, as you have not only 'hijacked' an existing thread, but have come to a forum dedicated to Japanese imported MPVs, unlikely the anyone here will have experience of Fronteraa (Thankfully).
There must be a Frontera forum somewhere, try a search on the net for it.

Regards Rob.
