(Home) Seat belts not rewinding

Both front seat belts on my '91 Townace are very reluctant to rewind the last half metre of belt when you get out, which is quite annoying.
As both behave the same and are getting worse as it gets colder I suspect it's just a build-up of greasy dirt inside somewhere, which could happen on any vehicle. But before I dive in I wonder if anyone has any tips, especially regarding access. - (#1624) Dave Mason, 14 Dec 01

There's not a lot you can do with the inertia mechinism, but you'll probably find a buildup of dirt on the top guide (shoulder) Give it's sliding surface a clean and polish.
If you want to dig deeper, the panels unscrew and unclip quite easily. - (#1625) david miller, 14 Dec 01

I would agree with what David has said about the top guides, I would however advise against opening upo the inertia reel mechanisms, as the moment you do, several springs will probably go whistling past your ears, the cold is inlikely to be the problem, i find a similar problem on the driver's belt, but this is due to the fact I have the belt high up & I sit a long way back (I'm 6ft 2in) therefore the belt has a virtual twist in it & will not retract through the top guide until I assist it. Yes, cleaning and polishing the top guides (with a bit of wax) does a satisfactory job. - (#1798) Dave Mason, 4 Jan 02
