(Home) Vegetable oil as fuel

I've been told by a friend that his mate runs his diesel car on vegetable oil with no modifications and he's done this with his past vehicles. Vegetable oil only cost about 25p per litre. I also saw a program about it on tv a few months ago, but that guy did do a modification. Any input from anyone? Mr Miller or Mr Mason perhaps? Hing - (#1671) Hing To, 20 Dec 01

Try some of the boidiesel and /or veggiepower sites... Also search for the name Terry de Winne
Very popular in europe and catching on in the US.
We still must pay duty in the UK...
Straight oil requires mods, biodiesel made from waste veggie oil doesn't.
Sometimes fuel hoses must be changed. - (#1672) david miller, 20 Dec 01

Am I getting confused here or is that what I see some garages selling as Red Diesel? - (#1673) Eagleneil, 20 Dec 01

Red diesel is dyed thus so that it may be identified for farming and off-road purposes. Get dipped by Customs with that in your tank and you're in big trouble... - (#1674) david miller, 21 Dec 01

So how can garages sell it? There seems to be loads selling local to me, would this do any damage to the engine? And no, I haven't tried it just curious about it that's all. - (#1696) Eagleneil, 23 Dec 01

They can sell it to anyone, it's just that whoever buys it must not use it for a road-based vehicle.
DERV= diesel engined road vehicle. - (#1699) david Miller, 24 Dec 01

If you buy Agricultural ( red diesel )in the south of Ireland its "Green Diesel " ???!!!! if filling up in the South beware of shady pump attendants ( seeing your northern registration )who will fill you vehicle with cheaper Green Diesel instead of White Diesel and charge you for white Diesel. I had it done to me. It was only when my son remarked to me on the way back home that the pump attendant used two different Pump nozzles to fill (a) my tank and (b) my extra jerrycans that I became suspicious. On dipping my tank I found Green Diesel. Mind you we both made money on it because either Diesel is so much cheaper in the south. But ignorance is no excuse to the custome people! - (#1818) stephen judge, 4 Jan 02

There is some interesting information regarding running vehicles on Vegatable oil on this website:www.goatindustries.co.uk

Is anyone running on veg/sunflower/rape seed/recovered or bio-diesel oil?
I tried the trial suggested on the veggiepower index site, of dis-connecting the fuel tank and replacing it with a bottle of cooking oil. Engine started ok, (tried a few times to ensure all diesel from filter onwards had been used), and ran fine and less noisy but was unable to road test.
I'm wary of taking the big step of filling the tank and would be happy to know someone has been there before.

Sounds good Clive, but try doing a COLD start on pure veggie...
Don't forget to pay the duty on your Crisp-and-dry...

But shouldn't you be considering Olive oil? The polyunsaturates in veg oil coupled with the high temperature will play havoc with the arteries and coat the pistons with cholesterol, eeoooh !

? could I just mix a few litres of veggie oil in with the smelly diesel ????

( I don't have a problem with my Townies cholesterol as I give it a good work out every week !! )

Yes you can but there are problems see veggiepower site for all the answers.
