(Home) Heater blower not working (Sp+)

I've just bought a 1989 2.0 petrol Space Cruiser and discovered when it was icy yesterday morning that the blower in the front doesn't seem to work. The rear blower is working but blows out cold air; the front gives out warm air but not at enough speed to defrost the front screen. The two small vents in the top middle of the dash blow out cold air while the two outer vents blow warm as well as the windscreen vents.
Help! I'm confused...
I've checked the fuses under the dash on the left; all seem to be ok though can't tell if the spaces should have fuses in or not even with a Taraga handbook that came with the vehicle. I can't tell from the fuse diagrams which vehicle I have. Doh.
Any advice welcomed! - (#1676) Maria, 21 Dec 01

the power for the front fan is fed through a thermal cutout- cylindrical thingwith a hole in the top for you to prod a bent paperclip to reset it. There's a number of them situated around the fusebox or under the glovebox. try resetting them all. Do you hear a relay click when you turn the fan on?
It's normal for the centre vents to be cold, BTW - (#1678) david miller, 22 Dec 01

I tried resetting all the circuit breakers but it didn't help. There is no click when I switch the fan on.
I did wonder if it had blown a fuse when the previous owner had it and someone has removed the dead one without replacing it. There are a couple of spaces on the fuse board, but I don't know if they are meant to have fuses in them or not. In the handbook, there are pictures of the various layouts, but none the same as mine.
There is a 75 fuse in the spare carrier, but the other space is empty. If I knew which fuse it was and what number it was, I could use an existing fuse in one of the spaces to see if it works, but I don't know which one it should be and I don't want to overload any component or cause something else vital to stop working! - (#1682) Maria, 22 Dec 01

Maria
There is a front heater blower motor relay that you can check for power feed and body ground and a front heater blower resistor that may be duff, otherwise check for any linkage that may have come adrift. Difficult to get to though.

I tried resetting the CB's to get my front blower to work and it didn't work. THe fan *does* make a click when you slide the switch from off to on...any ideas? Does it mean that the fan is burnt out or something?
BTW I can take my keys out of the ignition while it is running. Ooer. - (#1689) Maria, 23 Dec 01

If you are getting a definite click and CB is not switching off (indicating a short) and the connection to earth is ok, then it could be the resistor rather than the motor relay.

If it's the resistor, the fan will still run at full speed.
Probably the motor, a voltage check would verify... - (#1707) david miller, 24 Dec 01

Thanks all for your help.
Now please can anybody tell me how to get to the fan motor to test it? ;) - (#1709) Maria, 25 Dec 01

In behind the glovebox, although most of the tests can be done from the resistor connector that faces out from the heater box, in front of the fan. - (#1713) david miller, 26 Dec 01
