(Home) Electrics faults

i wonder if you can help me with a couple of faults i have encountered with my townie . Firstly all of a sudden the battery warning light, low oil level, coolant level and fuel filter drain light have decided to stay on whilst driving all levels o.k. any ideas . secondly upon occasions the vehicle will not turn over when key is turned although i'm pretty sure this is afault with the starter solenoid contacts . lastly does any one know where i can obtain a replacement passenger interior light bulb without it costing top dollar(the flourescent strip bulb)many thanks also i would be interested in a workshop manual if any one knows of them . - (#1680) Glynn Smith, 22 Dec 01

1.alternator prob- no charge.
2.common problem, sometimes it's the contacts, sometimes it's a voltage drop between the switch and the solenoid- next time it won't start, try touching the solenoid wire to the main starter terminal. If it starts, it's a voltage drop.
Re the fluo. tube, you might want to try Maplin or an electrical wholesalers - (#1685) david miller, 23 Dec 01

Another avenue Glynn, if you don't have any luck with the electrical suppliers already suggested, is a local boatyard. Do you live anywhere near a canal ? I "narrowboat" and the boat has these type of bulbs. I think you will find that these bulbs will be stocked at any good yard or chandlers. - (#1695) John Davis, 23 Dec 01

thanks for the help dave and john.dave any idea why i should have the voltage drop to starter and how can overcome problem,is fitting a relay the answer or is there alredy a relay in the system that could be faulty?many thanks again for your previous help. - (#1870) Glynn Smith, 10 Jan 02

There is no relay. Fitting one would cure the problem, but what I have done is to run an additional wire from the ign. switch to the starter. This bypasses the inhibitor switch, so it would be possible to start in gear, but that's not an issue to me. - (#1871) David Miller, 11 Jan 02
