(Home) 4WD. 4 wheel joy

At last, a decent snow fall, went out in the Liteace, and what joy, passing the stranded and skidding Audi's and Jags, the lack of speed on motorways no longer bothers me. I'm hoping for 6 weeks of this! - (#1742) Eagleneil, 30 Dec 01

isn't it!
they handle suprisingly well in the snow - (#1743) skippy, 30 Dec 01

Aren't you the lucky ones, living near London, we never seem to get any snow, I'm still waiting to try out the 4x4 on my Townie in the snow, still, it may snow tonight (but I won't hold my breath). - (#1744) Rob Drinkwater, 30 Dec 01

You really think so? I find travelling on untreated roads here in Derbyshire can be a nightmare, the backend wags around like the dog's tail as soon as you get any speed up. The 4WD is the get out of jail card but having to get in and out to lock the wheels is a real pain. I dread to think how those with 2WD Townies cope in bad weather.

Ian, if the weather is bad, just leake the front hubs locked, then you can switch-on-the-fly when conditions dictate. - (#1748) david miller, 31 Dec 01

No problem with the townie 4x4 on the Isle of Man, snow no problem, go anywhere ice, snow etc, better grip than a Ford Explorer, passed one on a hill, the ford was struggling but the townie went past as if the road was dry. - (#1749) john Kinrade, 31 Dec 01

Ian,
I live in Derbyshire (as near as damn!) and I've found no problems, so long as you are in no rush, and if I can get around Matlock then it must be ok! - (#1751) Eagleneil, 31 Dec 01

Patience was never a strong point of mine. Mind you I wouldn't fancy tackling that big hill that runs by the Council Offices, even with 4WD. It's a hell of a climb even in summer!

As a 2WD liteace owner I can appreciate how much better it has been for you 4WD Townies. I was reduced to reversing up the hill outside my house. ---- Converts my rear wheel drive to a front wheel drive ! A tip for other 2WD's. - (#1817) stephen judge, 4 Jan 02
