(Home) Oil leak & lots of it

Since buying our Townie, we have been able to sort out all the little problems that it had with the help of the BoK, we bought it in November, and it only came to this country in October, so it had hardly been used since it would have been drained of engine oil for the journey from Japan. So when I got it I changed all the filters, put fully synthetic diesel oil in it & added a tin of the WYNNS Professional engine oil stop leak, this reduced the oil leak that we had experienced since purchasing, subsequently I have added another stop leak can & copious amounts of oil to refil each time the light on the dash comes on, even at the trade prices I get, the oil is costing us dear. Perversely I think the oil is coming out of the level switch in the sump, if so, no amount of stop leak will cure this, unless it is a rubber or neoprene seal that has gone, after all this preamble the question is, has anybody experienced this switch leaking & how did they cure it, will it need to be removed & re-sealed, or a replacement sought, David, Ian, anyone can you help. Thanks Regards Rob. - (#1776) Rob Drinkwater, 2 Jan 02

Rob, there is a gasket sealing the level sender. Have you tightened the screws? Is there any chance the sump has slackened off also?- it's not gasketed, but sealed with silicone. - (#1777) david miller, 3 Jan 02

Familiar symptoms for me. Annoying amount of oil dripping at first (July 01). Found oil level over full so took some out, replaced sump nut gasket and generally cleaned up the underside. Still leaked, apparently from around front end of crankshaft, so added Stop Leak which pretty well fixed things.
Low oil light appears every couple of weeks even though almost at "F" on dipstick so I add a couple of cupfulls. I wonder if this is why it was over-filled before.
Was intending to get front crankshaft oilseal replaced when I get the cambelt changed, but I'd like to check the idea that the leak is around the level switch and so would like more detail about where to find it, please. - (#1784) Dave Mason, 3 Jan 02

Dave:
Had similar symptoms many years ago. Rear crankshaft oil seal leaking on a ????? Vauxhall Viva / Morris 1100 can't remember which. Ended up it was worn crankshaft bearings and the shaft started to sit on the seals. Hope its not this but worth Bearing in mind ( excuse the pun ) ! - (#1822) stephen judge, 5 Jan 02
