(Home) Knocking

Further to my recent posting regarding knocking from front of engine (super extra TD, K reg) at low idle speed, i.e in drive/stationary (thanx to David Miller - I don't think it could be big valve clearance as the knocking occured suddenly and literally overnight), I have checked all drive belts, power steering, alternator. Adjusted all and belts all new. Although belts were fairly loose, there still appears to be the same knocking but it sounds like it's coming from the fuel injection pump. (Also noticed slight diesel leak from pump directly above the air con pump but not coming from throttle spindle).
Please let me know if I have an expensive job ahead of me!!
Many thanx

Barry, have you checked the crank pulley bolt, as per Stephen Judge? Other than that, perhaps the front bearing in the injection pump is wearing?(might be expensive...) - (#1844) david miller, 8 Jan 02

My thanks go to Stephen Judge & David Miller for their advice. I ran the engine at various points of the stripdown (ie after the removal of each belt) the knocking noise was still there, it was only as i removed the air-con belt the noise got louder, by then i realised your diagnosis was right. the pulley bolt was loose and there was damage to the bolt and the woodruff key, so a trip to my local dealer sorted me out and while i was there bought a new timing belt, fitted it all back together (fairly straight forward)
and its quiet again
Many thanks Barry - (#1857) Barry Powell, 8 Jan 02
