(Home) VIN plate codes

My web page may contain some useful info for decoding your build plates.
Its mostly passenger car stuff but you may be able to use some of it and to also suggest some extensions to it.

Thanks for that, Wayne. Re your other message, aren't bellhousings interchangeable to allow different engines to use the same box? - (#1846) david miller, 8 Jan 02

Yes, different bellhousing can be used but not all combinations are possible.
We need to know which gearboxes came standard behind a Y engine that can withstand 150+ HP (200+ kW). So far we have found ways to modify the T50 Carina gearbox to fit but it is a only a weak gearbox. We are hoping that we can find a donor vehicle that has the Y block with a W40/W50/W55/W56/W57 gearbox. Then we can use that bellhousing on our cars.
But I have the suspicion that your engines are transversely mounted and thus your gearboxes will not be usefull for our project. - (#1847) Wayne Stephenson, 8 Jan 02

Wayne,
I cannot comment much on the suitability etc of the various gearboxes & engines but, the Townace and Masterace range, the main type of vehicle discussed on this forum, have in-line engines and not transverse. So does, I feel sure, the Spacecruiser. The Toyota Previa, with it's imported twin, the Lucida, do, I think, have transverse engines. - (#1848) John Davis, 8 Jan 02

We're all inline here! The autos use the A45 series box, the manuals use W- series AFAIK. But no townace is going to put out more than maybe 120BHP - (#1851) david miller, 8 Jan 02
