(Home) Driving. Great motor

just though I'd let you know I just did the following trip over 9 days with a twin axle 9' trailer and 6 people... (5 piece rock band from the USA and all their gear)
London - Bristol - Dublin - Limerick - Nottingham - Glasgow - Newcastle - Leeds - Birmingham - London
did not miss a beat (as usual) and now shows 196,000 kms on the clock
had the beast 2 years now, and only changed the clutch master and slave cylinder, exhaust, and now on second set of new tyres.
not bad going I'd say - (#2096) skippy, 4 Feb 02

Sorry this is not really a technially informative post, just a follow up to my earlier post and stated intention to head off to North West Scotland as a maiden voyage for the Townie.

From Alnwick to Applecross a distance of 360 miles in 7 hours and 11.5 gallons of diesel an average speed of 51.4 MPH and 31.3 MPG. This with four adults, climbing equipment, clothes and food. The latter part of the journey involved a spectacular ascent over a pass (sorry the name escapes me) to get into Applecross.

The total round trip mileage was 937 miles and 32 gallons consumed (ale consumption may have been slightly bettered......but hey whos counting!!)which according to my calculations equates to 29.2 MPG. The only mechanical casualty was a retiring offside main beam, are these easily sought from motor factors??

Sorry Tom never made it up as far as Gairloch although we did end up on a Kayak trip round the inner sound of Raasay with its seal colonies and porpoises. Some of the most beautiful scenery I have ever seen.

On a final note, the three guys that accompanied me were impressed with the smoothness and comfort of the Townie, all had been dreading the travelling time/distance. However we completed the journey (both ways) relaxed and comfortable and it is testimony to the driving position that if necessary I could have turned around and driven back almost immediately.

Hi George,

Glad you had a good trip and all went well. Fantastic area, can't beat it (IMHO!). The pass you go over is called the pass of the cattle, in Gallic it is Bealach Na Ba, just refered to as "the bealach" (be-al-ach). My previous job took me over it every week.... it was a hard life....
