(Home) Ball joints

Has anybody got an idea of where i can get a ball joint for a 1990 2.0 td 4wd townie.
BBC Spares have told me that it can only be purchased as a complete part from toyota (which will cost a fortune).

Based in Derby have vin number ready when phoning.I think he will do mail order uses mostly blueprint parts from japan. - (#2222) Richard, 13 Feb 02

Unfortunately Richard, Blueprint do not list any ball joints for the 4WD models, however they do list both upper & lower for the 2WD Townies. But not much use to Cliff I'm afraid as his is a 4WD. For a full list of the parts available for both 2 & 4WD Townies from ADL Blueprint, visit the main site & click on the parts page, or visit ace answers which also has all the parts listed on the parts pages. The ball joint I require is a top one David - (#2226) Cliff W, 14 Feb 02

Ohh, that's a complete suspension arm then! Have you tried repacking with grease through the small bolt-hole at the top? - (#2227) david miller, 15 Feb 02

i have had two owners asking about the upper ball joint on rwd townies.
jack up and remove wheel. there is a small blanking bolt on top of the upper ball joint, clean round it and remove, insert grease nipple (local parts shop will have one, take bolt for correct thread, and get an angled one if available), then pump in heavy duty grease. i think i use black castrol mb2?
cures the suspension groan (well one of them), prolongs the life of the joint.

4x4 has the same plug. Even more essential on the 4x4, considering the upper balljoint comes on the wishbone at £250 or so!

Moly grease is specified, yes.

If not the above then try squirting a silicone based lubricant into the rubber mountings.
